“You were meant to come here… So was I.” MGM+ has unveiled the full trailer for an intriguing sci-fi series called Beacon 23, set to launch in November. Beacon 23 was originally developed as a Spectrum Original series as part of an effort to entice cable subscribers, but this division was shut down and projects were sold off. It ended up at MGM and is ready to go. The story unfolds in the farthest reaches of the Milky Way in the 23rd Century following Aster (starring Lena Headey), a government agent, and Halan (Stephan James), a stoic ex-military man working at Beacon 23. They find their fates entangled after becoming trapped inside one of many Beacons that serve as a lighthouse for intergalactic travellers. Every Beacon is run by one highly trained human and a specialized A.I. Halan doesn’t trust Aster, as not everything is at it seems. This is adapted from a book by Hugh Howey, who also wrote the books that Apple’s sci-fi Silo series is based on. Described as “thought-provoking genre storytelling”, this series features Bo Martynowska, Cyrus Faird, Stephan James, Natasha Mumbas, Stephen Root, Jaeden Noel, & Daniel Malik. Yes – this looks VERY promising, with some epic dark matter twists and expansive sci-fi concepts. Wow. I’m 100% into this.
Here’s the first official trailer for MGM+’s sci-fi series Beacon 23, direct from YouTube:
“For centuries, men and women have manned lighthouses to ensure the safe passage of ships. It is a lonely job, and a thankless one for the most part. Until something goes wrong. Until a ship is in distress. In the twenty-third century, this job has moved into outer space. A network of beacons allows ships to travel across the Milky Way at many times the speed of light. These beacons are built to be robust. They never break down. They never fail. At least, they aren’t supposed to.” –Intro to the book “Beacon 23”
Beacon 23 takes place in the farthest reaches of the Milky Way galaxy, and follows Aster (Lena Headey), a government agent, and Halan (Stephan James), a stoic ex-military man, whose fates become entangled after they find themselves trapped together inside one of many Beacons that serve as a “lighthouse” for intergalactic travelers. Every Beacon is run by one highly trained human and also a specialized Artificial Intelligence. Aster mysteriously finds her way to the lonely Beacon-keeper Halan, and a tense battle of wills unfolds. Halan begins to question whether Aster is friend or foe, as her ability to disguise her agenda and motives could make her a formidable opponent. Beacon 23 is a series created by writer Zak Penn (of Behind Enemy Lines, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, The Incredible Hulk, “Alphas”, Ready Player One, Free Guy), adapted from the book of the same name by Hugh Howey. With writing by Allison Moore. Featuring episodes directed by Daniel Percival, Lewin Webb, Erskine Forde, and Oz Scott. Showrun by Glen Mazzara & Zak Penn. Exec produced by Mazzara, Penn, David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, James Middleton, Tina Thor, Nick Nantell, Katie O’Connell Marsh, Elisa Ellis, Liz Varner, Ira Steven Behr, Daniel Percival, Joy Blake, Headey & James. MGM debuts Beacon 23 streaming MGM+ starting November 12th, 2023. Look good?
