One of the most emotional stories Stephen King ever wrote was also one of two women-centered works to take place during the same solar eclipse. The first was Dolores Claiborne, which, unlike most of King’s bibliography, was full-stop drama with no horror in its stars, at least not in the traditional sense of the word. The second is his novella Gerald’s Game, an intimate story of survival, trauma, and perseverance.
in 2017, horror hero Mike Flanagan was tapped by Netflix to adapt this surly unadaptable story for the screen. Flanagan was already known to genre fans at the time, having delivered us Oculus, Hush, Before I Wake, Absentia, and Ouija: Origin of Evil. The filmmaker was five for five and would continue his terrifying winning streak with one of the better Stephen King adaptations in recent memory.
In Gerald’s Game, while trying to spice up their marriage in their remote lake house, Jessie (Carla Gugino) must fight to survive when her husband (Bruce Greenwood) dies unexpectedly, leaving her handcuffed to their bed frame.
While this sounds simple enough, the following horrors are anything but ordinary. One specific monstrous antagonist even caught the attention of social media users, going viral multiple times on TikTok over the past few years.
The Moonlight Man is a fine example of King at his most frightening, part trauma-manifestation and park blood-hungry lunatic; his image will stick with you long after the film ends.

In an interview with Netflix, Mike Flanagan shared what he thought the story and his subsequent adaptation of Gerald’s Game was really about. “On the surface, the story is about a married couple who take a weekend away to try to rekindle the spark they’ve been missing. Tragically, the husband dies during a sex game, and his wife is left handcuffed to the bedpost and must figure out how to survive,” he told the platform in 2017.
Flanagan concluded with,
“Underneath it all, though, it’s about marriage itself and the secrets and baggage that we all bring to our relationships. And ultimately, it’s about how our past shapes our destiny, and how confronting those old ghosts might be the only way to keep on truly living.”
