The upcoming live-action Gundam movie has received an exciting update.
Sydney Sweeney has been tapped to star in a live-action Gundam movie that is being co-developed by Legendary Entertainment and Bandai Namco Filmworks. The film is being directed by Jim Mickle, while Noah Centineo will also star.
What is the update on the Gundam movie?
Per Deadline, it has now been announced that Netflix is on board to release the movie. There’s no word on a release date as of yet, though the project finding a distributor is definitely a good sign.
Netflix was originally involved with the project in 2021. At that time, Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts was attached to direct the movie; however, it was then reported in 2024 that Mickle was taking over and that the streaming service was no longer involved with the live-action Gundam.
The script for this version of the movie also comes from Mickle. He also serves as a producer alongside his partner Linda Moran for Nightshade.
Plot details remain under wraps at this time.

Gundam is set in the Universal Century, a future where humanity has colonized space. When a rebellion erupts between Earth and its colonies, the ensuing conflict is fought by pilots in massive mechanized contraptions known as mobile suits. The long-running multimedia franchise first launched with series Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979. Since then, the internationally renowned Yoshiyuki Tomino-created endeavor has spanned 83 animated series and movies, in addition to a lucrative merchandising arm that generates $600 million annually.”
Sweeney played Millie Calloway in Paul Feig’s The Housemaid, which is still playing in United States theaters, while Centineo will soon be seen playing Ken Masters in the live-action Street Fighter movie arriving later this year.
