Are you looking for something to stream over the weekend to appease your horror movie bug? Below are some suggestions that should tide you over until the new year. There is quite a variety, from possession to cannibalism, these streaming movies are available wherever you get your premium On Demand digital content.
Lullaby
From director John R. Leonetti who directed the first Annabelle movie, comes another mother and child creeper, but this time it’s not an ugly doll doing the damage it’s an ancient demon. Leonetti said in an interview with Screen Rant that he wanted to make the mother in Lullaby relatable by making her question her parental skills.
“Yeah, the most powerful tool a demon has, or a spirit has is to get inside your mind. As a mother, that’s it. That’s the most powerful thing. Especially since she was a very successful restaurateur. And then in real life, with every mother and father and having babies and the separation of work and whose taking care of the babies and all that, it’s a very relatable thing to really everybody once they go through it. So that conflict is so good to play with. Oona did a good job with it.” — John R. Leonetti, Screen Rant
Story: A new mother discovers a lullaby in an ancient book and soon regards the song as a blessing. But her world transforms into a nightmare when the lullaby brings forth the ancient demon Lilith.
Prey For the Devil
This is an interesting twist on the possession film. This time it’s a nun battling the presence of evil, something that is forbidden by the Catholic church. Although the film stumbles a little along the way, it’s still a decent genre entry with some surprise twists and effects work.
Story: A nun prepares to perform an exorcism and comes face to face with a demonic force with mysterious ties to her past.
Bones and All
This unusual film is one part horror movie and one part romance. Both the leads, Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell, give it their all as biological cannibals who are trying to survive both on instinct and street smarts. This was one of the unexpected horror hits of the year and is well worth a watch.
Story: Based on the novel by Camille DeAngelis, Bones and All is a story of first love between Maren (Taylor Russell), a young woman learning how to survive on the margins of society, and Lee (Timothée Chalamet), an intense and disenfranchised drifter; a liberating road odyssey of two young people coming into their own, searching for identity and chasing beauty in a perilous world that cannot abide who they are. Luca Guadagnino directs from a screenplay by David Kajganich.
Nanny (VOD or Free with Prime)
Word of mouth has gotten around about this film. Whether it’s good or bad remains to be seen. But it currently sits with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 89%, lauded with praise for writer-director Nikyatu Jusu.
Story: Immigrant nanny Aisha, piecing together a new life in New York City while caring for the child of an Upper East Side family, is forced to confront a concealed truth that threatens to shatter her precarious American Dream.
Nocebo
Eva Green is always a treat to watch. Her list of movies includes Dark Shadows (2012), Penny Dreadful, and Dumbo (2019). Here the French actress nixes on-screen glamour and gives us a warts-and-all performance as a sick woman trying to find peace. Director Lorcan Finnegan’s previous horror film Vivarium put him on the map as one to watch in the future.
Story: A fashion designer is suffering from a mysterious illness that puzzles her doctors and frustrates her husband, until help arrives in the form of a Filipino carer, who uses traditional folk healing to reveal a horrifying truth.
