Cult horror director Dylan Mars Greenberg has released a new 3D short film for Halloween. The comedy horror short, Night of The Day of the Tompkins Weed Monster, is a lo-fi monster movie shot with two camcorders, an homage to the shot-on-video horrors of the 80s and 90s. Featuring a cast of queer performers and real New Yorkers, the film also skewers gentrification in the rapdily changing city.
“I’ve always wanted to make a 3d film, and for years I have wanted to return to my roots”, says Greenberg, whose work includes films for Adult Swim , and critically acclaimed music videos. “I set out to make something really fun in two days, with improvised dialogue and absurdist humor. I was also inspired by my godmother Reverend Jen, who I co-directed a film with called Werewolf Bitches. Her humor has always been very New York, skewering attitudes of gentrification.”
Night of The Day of the Tompkins Weed Monster stars Forrest Bennett as the titular Weed Monster. The ensemble cast includes Troma’s Amanda Flowers, Josafat Concepcion, and Darryl LaVare of “Ecstasy in Entropy”. Joining the cast are Adrianne “Kiss” Kus, Roberto Beltre, Abraham Lincoln III, Margaret Scura, Anthony St James, David “Alexander” The Great, Avi Ezor, Alyssa Marie C, Octavia Leona Kohner, Damon Beirne, Robyn Allison, Lisa Taylor, Ray Lavare, and Azul Rodriguez of Stand Clear of the Closing Doors.
Night of The Day of the Tompkins Weed Monster is available in three versions: a Youtube 3D version, which gives options for anaglyph (red and blue) and VR viewing; a side-by-side version for stereoscopic viewing; and a native anaglyph version for viewing on smart TVs. The director urges viewers to view this film by connecting their computer to a flatscreen television using HDMI or pulling up the anaglyph version on their smart TV. Lastly, the film is also available as a free digital download which is recommended for use with VLC player’s Anaglyph feature, or for Virtual Desktop on Oculus.
