James Wan Intends to Make the Next ‘Saw’ Film “Scary”

Director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell smashed onto the scene with their debut hit, Saw. The vicious horror film about a killer named Jigsaw who puts his victims through brutal survival challenges to test their will to live hooked into audiences in 2004 and still hasn’t let go. The creators have been away from the franchise for a bit, but will be returning with Blumhouse’s acquisition of the title.

While at Sundance for a screening of the original that started it all, Wan spoke to Letterboxd about the upcoming eleventh film and had some words that will surely excite fans of the franchise.

“One of the things I really want to do with this next Saw is make it scary again. I want to make a scary Saw…not just gory, but psychologically scarring, like what Leigh and I did in the first movie,” said Wan.

Added Wan, “For me to finally come back to it, I feel I have probably the freshest outlook. I feel I can come back to it with a new perspective whilst knowing that with this next movie I want to hark back to the spirit of the first movie…Leigh and I both want to recapture the spirit of that first film and revisit Jigsaw’s philosophy, which is that he goes after people who don’t appreciate their lives.”

Wan continued, “At the same time, I want to honor what people have come to love about the franchise, whilst trying to do something fresh and new that we haven’t seen before…We need to do something different in order to reach out to a new generation that didn’t grow up with it.”

It certainly sounds like Wan is taking the best approach possible for the eleventh installment. After all, if there’s anyone who can make Jigsaw scary again, it’s James Wan and Leigh Whannell.
