Ozzy Osbourne is a true force of gnarly nature. Not even two years after his last full face-melting album, Ordinary Man, he is back with his latest album Patient Number 9. Last night, Osbourne shared his new titular single off of the new album.
The song features Jeff Beck as well, which only further how much it rules. It’s incredible to still see Osbourne performing at this level the way he does. He is one of the rare cases in metal that still manages to create songs that are very fitting with his entire body of work – by which I mean they rock and have rarely stopped.
The video for Patient Number 9 which features Osbourne battling demons of his past and present is a brave reminder that the singer is in a terrifying place in his own life being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2020. Due to the diagnosis and COVID Ozzy postponed tour dates till 2023. He has also been quite vocal about the possibility of his touring days coming to an end soon.
The new song and its lyrics very much speak to the possibility of facing down mortality and I love that Ozzy in keeping with his persona is doing so with two middle fingers stuck up in the air. Simultaneously, he shows his past catching up with him. That being perfectly illustrated when a bat bites his head off, stopping him from biting the head off of a bat himself.
Much like a lot of Osbourne’s work this video will very much appeal to the horror crowd. The video which is animated and directed by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane is filled with demons, bats, werewolves, vampires pills and of course Ozzy at the center of it all.
