With fans continuing to discuss Netflix’s Arcane series months after its ending, Amanda Overton, who served as a writer on the show, has explained why Vi and Caitlyn only shared a kiss in Season 2. In a recent interview, Overton revealed the motivations behind delaying Vi and Caitlyn’s first kiss together, despite the duo forming a romantic dynamic in the first season.
Amanda Overton wanted ‘to make everyone wait’ for Vi and Caitlyn’s kiss in Arcane
While speaking with Collider‘s Perri Nemiroff, the seasoned television writer remarked that Vi and Caitlyn, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld and Katie Leung, respectively, shared their first kiss in Arcane Season 2 Episode 3 as the show’s creators wanted to thoroughly flesh out the relationship between the two leads.
“For me, because we knew their relationship was going to be endgame and that it was going to take the whole series to get to, I really wanted them to kiss, and I like it when characters are doing either the right thing for the wrong reasons or the wrong thing for the right reasons, because then you want to watch more,” Overton explained.
She then added, “Because we knew that we were having a second season, and we were going to make this arc last that long, I was like, ‘Don’t put the kiss in the first season! We need to make everyone wait.’ Which, unfortunately, that was like torturing people, sadly.”
However, not everyone agreed with the decision to hold off on Vi and Caitlyn’s kiss in the initial stages, as per Overton. Notably, Steinfeld and Leung’s characters share an extremely vulnerable and tender moment in Season 1, where Vi opens up to Caitlyn about her inner conflicts. While many fans expected the pair to become intimate in this scene, Overton explained that the sequence “was like sort of the first moment where they were able to let their guards down, and to us it was like they needed to be in that moment.”
Despite the long wait, Vi and Caitlyn developed a close bond following their kiss, with the two ending up together at the end of Arcane Season 2.
