More The Batman Spin-off Shows Being Explored Following The Penguin’s Success

Matt Reeves continues to hope for future projects set in the world of The Batman and recently teased that even more The Batman spin-off shows could be coming.

What did Matt Reeves say about other The Batman spin-off shows?

In a recent discussion with Andy Serkis for Interview Magazine, Reeves was asked if he has plans for any other spin-off shows, or if they plan on doing something like The Penguin again. Reeves said they have “been talking,” and that, following the massive success of The Penguin, his goal is to make other stories similar to the series, which focuses on putting “a lens” on certain characters.

“Yeah. We have been talking, and it’s exciting because people are now embracing the show. My fantasy is coming into being, which is very exciting, and HBO has been incredibly supportive from the beginning. Now to see that the show is being embraced is really, really exciting. We have been talking about doing other shows. I wanted to make sure that we didn’t do the origin tale, which so many of the other series have done. I think the idea of being able to put a lens on these characters is a really exciting idea.”

Reeves continued: “It’s about cities and their dysfunction and the world and its dysfunction, which is what Batman stories are all about. They’re all about Gotham being a place that should be better. And you can have the experience of this almost novelistic epic crime saga, but you also just get these separate experiences. They have their own dramatic value. So Oz’s story is Oz’s story, and the idea is to do these other stories in the same way.”

This isn’t the first time Reeves has opened up about his hopes for a larger The Batman universe. In September, he told Entertainment Weekly that he’d love to create a “crime epic” saga that covers a variety of characters.

Reeves’ plans for a grander Batman universe have gone through some big changes over the past few years. In 2020, a Max series about the Gotham City Police Department was announced and said to be tying into The Batman. However, that project never came to be. Another rumored series about Arkham Asylum was also said to be in the works, although nothing ever came of that project.
