The idea of US hating Canada in Fallout Season 2 surprised many fans when the show took the story north of the border. A brief but powerful flashback revealed that the relationship between the two countries is far darker in the Fallout universe than in real life.
Why does the US hate Canada in Fallout Season 2?
In Fallout Season 2 Episode 7, the show finally explores why tensions between the US and Canada run so deep. The episode opens with a flashback showing a young Annabel O’Hagan, later known as Vault 32 Overseer Steph Harper.
As a child, she escapes from a Canadian internment camp near Uranium City, Saskatchewan. During her escape, an American soldier in Power Armor stops her, forcing Steph to flee alone and leave her mother behind as she crosses into the US. The scene clearly shows how harsh US rule over Canada had become.
In the Fallout universe, US-Canada relations sees a major collapsed. The trouble began in 2059 during the Resource Wars, a time when countries fought desperately over dwindling resources. One major conflict during this era was the Sino-American War.
The US fought China in Alaska over valuable oil reserves. To support the war, the US built a massive pipeline that ran through Canada. American troops moved into Canadian territory to guard it, which angered many Canadians.
As US soldiers flooded into their country, resentment grew. Many Canadians viewed the military presence as an invasion disguised as protection. As the war dragged on, US resources continued to shrink. American leaders began to look north, fueled by anti-Canadian propaganda back home.
Over time, public support for invading Canada grew in the US. In 2072, Canadian protestors tried to sabotage the pipeline. US officials used this event and growing unrest across Canada as justification to take extreme action. By 2077, the US officially annexed Canada, ending its independence.
The Canadians resisted fiercely and violence broke out across the country. Afterward, the US set up detention camps across Canada, including one seen in Fallout Season 2 where Steph and her mother were held (via TheDirect).
In Fallout Season 2, the US doesn’t hate Canada without reason; it sees Canada as a resource-rich territory and a threat during a time of global war.
