Charly Bliss are back with a new single titled “I Need a New Boyfriend.” Stream it below.
An ode to romantic liberation, “I Need a New Boyfriend” leans into the New York-based band’s emo-pop sensibilities. Overtop a guitar-led arrangement, vocalist Eva Hendricks delivers melodic lines with lyrics about ditching her less-than-ideal boyfriend, who only offers her backhanded compliments, emotional unavailability, and is simply not fun enough to keep up.
“I think the best breakup songs are celebratory,” Hendricks explained in a statement. “Thankfully, decades of dating the wrong people has prepared me to write the emo, palm-muted breakup song of my dreams.”
“I Need a New Boyfriend” arrives alongside a music video directed by the band’s Dan Shure, featuring the band’s members trying out a speed-dating night on a set sculpted out of clay by Hendricks herself. “I was in Australia when Dan had the idea for this video, so we had to create a fictional Bliss Bar where we could all be together for Speed Dating Night,” she explained. “I bought the entire clay aisle of our local craft store and had a lot of fun creating a miniature version of the set that we could all be green-screened into.” Watch the video below.
Additionally, the computer dating program shown in the video has been recreated in real life, as the band has shared a new website called Bliss Finder, which “generates dating profiles to assist fans in the search for a ‘new boyfriend.’” After filling out a form, the site provides you with a name, age, and occupation (for example, I was assigned Marvin Fleck, a 66-year-old “Rat Czar”), and everyone’s “Favorite Song” is, of course, listed as “I Need a New Boyfriend.”
This past June, Charly Bliss returned with their first new music since 2020, sharing the single “You Don’t Even Know Me Anymore.”
