Jim Jinkins, creator of the beloved Nicktoon Doug, says he has developed a sequel series.
Jinkins initially disclosed the project in an interview with the YouTube channel Teen Buick that aired earlier this year. However, his comments were only recently picked up on social media.
Dubbed Doug Kids, the project would focus on Doug and Patti Mayonnaise, now adults and married (!), and their two children, Yancey and Doug Jr. The show would also feature adult versions of Skeeter, Roger, Beebe, Judy, Chalky, and other original characters.
Jinkins said he developed the sequel series at the encouragement of Disney+, who own the copyright to Doug.
“Doug is 33 years old — the fans of Doug have grown up, maybe some of them have gotten married, maybe some of them have kids. The idea of bringing Doug back now has real power in it,” he explained.
Jinkins cautioned that the project is still in the very early stages, as Disney+ has yet to officially give it the green-light. However, Jinkins went as far to share an early storyboard of the sequel series with the hope that it would compel Disney+ to move forward with the project.
The original Doug series aired for seven seasons between 1991 and 1999. The show also spawned a feature film that was released in 1999.
