Selena Gomez finally has a Primetime Emmy nomination in an acting category, and it couldn’t be sweeter. That’s why the 31-year-old star is celebrating the news with a cake, writing on Instagram Stories Wednesday (July 17) that she couldn’t be more thankful for the recognition.
After receiving word that she’d received a nod for outstanding performance by a lead actress in a comedy series — thanks to her performance as Mabel Mora on Only Murders in the Building — Gomez shared a photo of her flashing a big smile in front of a cake that reads, “Congratulations Emmy Nominee!” in pink icing.
“I’m honored and and insanely grateful for this,” she wrote. “Thank you @onlymurdershulu for giving me Mabel.”
The Rare Beauty founder also shared a joint post on her feed with costar Steve Martin, who received a lead acting nod as well, as did castmate Martin Short. “A repost in a more professional way….We’re thrilled with our nominations,” the Pink Panther actor captioned a photo of the trio.
Gomez’s nomination comes after three years of starring in the Hulu murder-mystery series, and two years of being passed over in the acting categories at the Emmys. In 2022, Martin — who’s been nominated twice for lead actor in a comedy — told The New York Times that he and Short, who’s on his third acting nomination for the show, were “dismayed that Selena was not nominated because she’s so crucial to our performances, really.”
Only Murders has also been nominated for outstanding comedy series for three years in a row, a credit to Gomez’s role as executive producer. The “Lose You to Love Me” singer’s boyfriend, producer Benny Blanco, accompanied her to the 2024 ceremony in January. On Thursday, he showed his girlfriend support by simply reposting news of her lead actress nomination on his Instagram Story.
Gomez’s latest feat also comes shortly after she and her Emilia Pérez costars — Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz — won best actress at the Cannes Film Festival.
