“This is the worst life decision I’ve ever made…” Rialto Pictures has revealed the official trailer for the Cat Person movie, adapted from the famous New Yorker article of the same name. This first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it opens in theaters starting in October. When Margot, a college sophomore goes on a date with the older Robert, she finds IRL Robert doesn’t live up to the Robert she has been flirting with over texts. A razor-sharp exploration of the horrors of dating. “Like the short story that stirred so much controversy, Cat Person will call upon you to reflect on romantic encounters you’ve had in the past, and to question the role (or multiple roles) you may have played. We’ve all been the victim in some narratives and the villain in others…” The film stars Emilia Jones as Margot, Nicholas Braun as Robert, Geraldine Viswanathan, Isabella Rossellini, Fred Melamed, Liza Koshy, and Michael Gandolfini. The poster art is also a direct reference to the kiss photo New Yorker used for the story from 2017. I saw this at Sundance and did not like it at all. It tries to be cleverer than it is, with a bad mix of ideas.
Here’s the main official trailer (+ poster) for Susanna Fogel’s Cat Person, direct from YouTube:
When Margot, a college sophomore (Emilia Jones) goes on a date with the older Robert (Nicholas Braun), she finds that IRL Robert doesn’t live up to the Robert she has been flirting with over texts. Cat Person is a razor-sharp exploration of the gender divide, the quagmire of navigating modern dating dynamics, and the dangerous projections we make in our minds about the person at the other end of our phones… Cat Person is directed by American filmmaker Susanna Fogel, director of the films Life Partners, and The Spy Who Dumped Me previously, plus TV series like “The Flight Attendant” and “The Wilds” most recently. The screenplay is written by Michelle Ashford. Adapted from the super famous short story written by Kristen Roupenian for New Yorker. Produced by Helen Estabrook and Jeremy Steckler. This initially premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read our review) to divisive reviews. Rialto Pics will debut Fogel’s Cat Person in theaters exclusively starting October 6th, 2023 this fall. Anyone interested in this?
