Extra Stylish Barbaric Fantasy Sci-Fi ‘She Is Conann’ Official US Trailer

“Six lives. Six incarnations.” Altered Innocence has revealed the US trailer for a wild & crazy experimental French film called She Is Conann, a unique re-imagining of the classic Conan the Barbarian myth through a modern gender-swapped lens. Yes, you read that right! This premireed at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year in Directors’ Fortnight, with stops at Fantastic Fest and Sitges. It’ll be opening in February in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Denver, and more, with director Bertrand Mandico and the star at opening weekend showings at Anthology Film Archives in NYC. Conan’s life at different stages is shown with a different aesthetic and rhythm from the classic Sumerian era to the near future. The film is a barbaric fantasy sci-fi trip that boldly celebrates the influences of Fellini Satyricon, The Night Porter, The Hunger, and Fassbinder’s entire oeuvre to craft a moving portrait of a warrior trying to find her place while existing outside of space, time, and meaning. Wow. Described as an “intoxicatingly lush 35mm-shot hero’s journey.” This stars Claire Duburcq, Christa Théret, Sandra Parfait, Agata Buzek, Nathalie Richard, and Françoise Brion as the many faces of Conann — from young woman to warrior queen, each overcoming the last— in addition to Julia Riedler & Mandico-constant Elina Löwensohn. In a barbaric fantasy sci-fi trip through time, sword-and-sorcery mythology is bent, fractured, gender-swapped by master visionary Bertrand Mandico in his third feature epic. Six lives, six eras, and six deaths mark Conann’s poetic journey through different incarnations and lesbian loves. Guiding Conann through her many epic lives is Elina Löwensohn as Rainer, a Cerberus of many otherworldly dimensions whose paparazzi camera sees all. The perversity of ‘The Wild Boys’ and the hero’s journey of ‘After Blue (Dirty Paradise)’ come together in this even greater handmade homage. With influences from ‘Fellini Satyricon’, ‘The Night Porter’, ‘The Hunger’, and Fassbinder’s entire oeuvre to craft a moving portrait of a warrior trying to find her place while outside of space, time, and meaning. She Is Conann, also known as simply Conann, is both written and directed by the French filmmaker Bertrand Mandico, director of the films The Wild Boys and After Blue, plus many short films. It’s produced by Avi Amar, Gilles Chanial, Emmanuel Chaumet. This premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar.
