“Life & death are the same. Both can have value & purpose.” FX & Hulu have revealed an official trailer for an epic new historical series called Shōgun, created by writers Justin Marks & Rachel Kondo. An epic saga of war, passion, and power set in Feudal Japan. From James Clavell’s novel of the same name, FX’s Shōgun is set at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found in a nearby fishing village. Set in the 17th Century, it follows John Blackthorne, a sailor who rises from outsider to samurai, while being used as a pawn in Japanese leader Toranaga’s struggle to reach the top of the ruling chain, or Shogun. The novel was previously adapted into a 1980 TV series, now with another fresh update. Hiroyuki Sanada stars as Yoshii Toranaga, co-starring with Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorne, and a massive ensemble including: Tadanobu Asano, Anna Sawai, Yûki Kedôin, Eushin Lee, Tommy Bastow, Hiroto Kanai, Hiromoto Ida, Emi Kamito, Kengo Hashimoto, Sen Mars, Toshi Toda, Mako Fujimoto. I’m a huge fan of Sanada already, so I’m interested no matter what. All the other footage looks astonishing.
Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for FX’s series Shōgun, direct from FX Networks’ YouTube:
FX’s new series Shōgun follows the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai: John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, still at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance. Shōgun is a 10-episode mini-series co-created by writer Rachel Kondo, her first major series for TV, along with Justin Marks, writer of Street Fighter, Rewind, The Jungle Book, and “Counterpart” series. Writing by Maegan Houang, Emily Yoshida, Shannon Goss, Matt Lambert, Ronan Bennett, Caillin Puente, Nigel Williams. Adapted from James Clavell’s novel. Featuring episodes directed by Frederick E.O.
