“People search for lightness because they shy away from burdens. That’s why this lightness exists.” Janus Films + Sideshow have revealed an official US trailer for the documentary film Anselm, made by German director Wim Wenders (who also has Perfect Days this year). This first premiered (in 3D!) at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in May, and it’s also screening at the Telluride Film Festival this week. This trailer is out for its debut in Telluride, though the film won’t hit theaters until December. Wenders’ Anselm doc is about Anselm Kiefer: one of the greatest contemporary artists. His past & present diffuse the line between film & painting, thus giving a unique cinematic experience that dives deep into an artist’s work and reveals his life path. Wenders follows his path from his roots in Germany into France, examining his life and his artwork. It was shot in 3D and in 6K resolution, which will make for a mesmerizing experience watching this on the big screen. I’ve heard stellar things about it from my colleagues, and it truly looks like a moving film.
Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Wim Wenders’ doc Anselm, direct from Janus’ YouTube:
In Anselm, Wim Wenders creates a portrait of Anselm Kiefer, one of the most innovative and important painters and sculptors of our time. Shot in 3D and 6K-resolution, the film presents a cinematic experience of the artist’s work which explores human existence and the cyclical nature of history, greatly inspired by literature, poetry, philosophy, science, mythology and religion. For over two years, Wim Wenders traced Kiefer’s path from his native Germany to his current home in France, connecting the stages of his life to the essential places of his career that spans more than five decades. Anselm is directed by prolific German filmmaker Wim Wenders, of the feature films Land of Plenty, The Million Dollar Hotel, Paris Texas, Hammett, The American Friend, Palermo Shooting, Every Thing Will Be Fine, and this year’s Perfect Days, plus docs including Buena Vista Social Club, The Soul of a Man, Pina, and The Salt of the Earth.. Produced by Karsten Brunig. This initially premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Janus Films + Sideshow will debut Anselm in select US theaters starting December 8th, 2023 later this year. Intrigued?
