“Zoe Saldana brings a burning intensity…” Netflix has unveiled their teaser trailer for the acclaimed film Emilia Pérez, a musical about a Mexican cartel leader transitioning to a woman. This is the latest film by award-winning French filmmaker Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, Rust & Bone, Dheepan, Sisters Brothers), and it premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year where it won Jury Prize & Best Actress prizes. We already posted the French trailer a few months ago. Talented lawyer Rita receives an unexpected offer… She has to help a feared cartel boss retire from his business and disappear forever by becoming the woman he’s always dreamed of being. It’s set mostly in Mexico, following the story of Rita and Manitas – and what happens after he switches to a she. The film stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Edgar Ramírez, Mark Ivanir. I think this is an amazing film! I raved about it in my review from Cannes – you’ve never seen anything like it before. At least they’re not shying away from the musical side of it in this teaser. Curious to hear reviews when it plays on Netflix later this year – take a look.

Overqualified and overexploited, Rita (Zoe Saldana) uses her talents as a lawyer for a big firm in Mexico more interested in laundering criminals than serving justice. But an unexpected way out opens up for her, to help cartel boss Manitas retire from the business and carry out the plan he’s been secretly preparing for years: to finally become the woman he’s always dreamed of being. Emilia Pérez is directed by acclaimed French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, director of the films See How They Fall, A Self-Made Hero, The Beat That My Heart Skipped, A Prophet, Rust and Bone, Dheepan, The Sisters Brothers, and Paris 13th District previously. The screenplay is written by Jacques Audiard, in collaboration with Thomas Bidegain, Nicolas Livecchi, and Léa Mysius. Produced by Pascal Caucheteux, Valérie Schermann, Anthony Vaccarello, and Audiard. With music by Camille and Clément Ducol. This first premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival playing in the Main Competition. Audiard’s Emilia Pérez opens first in French cinemas starting on August 21st, 2024. Netflix will also release this movie streaming in the US starting on November 13th in the fall.
