“Le’s play.” “Double it this time.” Gravitas has unveiled an official trailer for an indie pool hall thriller titled Break, which is a rather obvious pool reference when you “break” the game at the start. This will be getting a limited theatrical release later in April, though it hasn’t played at any festivals. In the film, Eli learns that his absent father was a Detroit pool hall legend. He journeys into the Detroit Pool scene, and must confront the realities and dangers of the game, along with his own demons. Michigan-native actor Darren Weiss stars as Eli, joined by Braedyn Bruner as Millie, Victor Rasuk, Jeff Kober, Patricia Belcher, Caleb Emery, Suzen Baraka, Uriah Shelton, Wendy Braun, and Rick Fitts. This looks pretty rough, but it’s nice to see a pool movie again, feels like it has been a while since there was one out in theaters. Check it out.
Here’s the official trailer (+ two posters) for Will Wernick’s Break, direct from Gravitas’ YouTube:
The film follows Eli (early 20s) as he juggles two jobs, tries to juggle taking care of his sister and mother, and relationship. A series of unexpected events Introduces him to the world of Detroit Pool where he learns his absent father was once a Detroit pool hall legend. Eli journeys into the scene, and must confront the realities & dangers of the game – and himself. Break is directed by the American indie filmmaker Will Wernick, director of the films Alone, The Breaks, Escape Room, Follow Me, and Safer at Home previously. The script is written by Dikega Hadnot, Spencer Mandel, and Will Wernick. Produced by John Ierardi and Bo Youngblood. This hasn’t premiered at any festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. Gravitas will release Wernick’s Break in select US theaters on April 26th, 2024, then on VOD starting June 11th this summer.
