“I’m going to drag you into this spell with me…” Mubi has unveiled an official trailer for the documentary film titled simple Witches, made by filmmaker Elizabeth Sankey. Believe it or not, this is actually a film about witches, and their depiction in pop culture and media. Witches by Elizabeth Sankey offers a profound look at the intersections of motherhood, mental health, and the enduring archetype of the witch, unraveling centuries of stigma with an empowering, modern perspective. The doc examines the relationship between cinematic portrayals of witches and postpartum depression, utilizing film history footage alongside personal testimony — while creating a new coven of women to reclaim their stories. After first premiering at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, Witches will be streaming on Mubi to watch later in November this fall. A fascinating personal essay about the concept of the witch turned into a full 90 minute doc to watch. 🧙♀️
