Living up to the excellent trilogy of ‘Planet of the Apes’ movies –– that spanned 2011-2017 (and were directed by Rupert Wyatt and then Matt Reeves) –– is no small feat.
It’s one that ‘The Maze Runner’s Wes Ball is shouldering with this brand-new entry, ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’, which moves the story along.
Some time has passed since the end of ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’, which saw Caesar (Andy Serkis) give his life as apes truly began to rise to power on the planet Earth following humanity’s decimation by a viral plague.
We’ve already had a teaser trailer for the movie, but 20th Century Studios has used the Super Bowl to launch a more complete look at the latest entry.

What’s the story of ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’?
The new movie is set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows.
As a new tyrannical ape leader (Kevin Durand’s Proximus Caesar) builds his empire, one young ape –– Noa (Owen Teague) undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
And in this new trailer, we see that means forging an unlikely alliance with a human named Nova (Freya Allan).
Who else is in ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’?
The cast, playing a blend of performance captured ape characters and humans, also includes Peter Macon and William H. Macy.
Since jumping aboard in 2019, Wes Ball has been developing the script and figuring out how to follow in Reeves’ footsteps, working with VFX experts to design the various ape characters and more.
