“There, I found others who wanted to watch the films I wanted to watch.” Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for a documentary film titled Yellow Door: 90s Lo-fi Film Club from Korea. It’s premiering soon at the 2023 Busan Film Festival in Korea, and will be available to watch worldwide on Netflix starting later in October. It reminds me of the doc Shirkers, but it’s an entirely different story, about young filmmakers in Korea. “I don’t think I’ve ever been as passionate about films as I was then.” –Bong. Before the renaissance of Korean cinema today, there was the film club, Yellow Door. Thirty years later, the story behind director Bong Joon-ho’s first short film and Korea’s first cinephile generation. The film revisits the era of avid film lovers who became the first generation of Korean cinephiles by tracking the memories of “Yellow Door Film Club” members – who gather again (over a Zoom) years later to reconnect. This looks like such a loving and wholesome appreciation of cinema and all the people who love films. It’s delightful. I will be watching this.
Official trailer (+ poster) for Lee Hyuk-rae’s doc Yellow Door: ’90s Lo-fi Film Club, from YouTube:
From Busan: “Only the few members of Yellow Door have seen fellow member Bong Joon-ho’s directorial debut film, Looking for Paradise, which was never released. This stop-motion animation about a gorilla leaving a dark and dirty basement to escape the attacks of dung bugs and heading to paradise was screened at an end-of-the-year party for members. When the wooden box containing the 8mm film hidden deep in Bong’s study for thirty years is opened, cinephiles’ memories of the early 1990s will come flooding back as well. In the era of film enthusiasts, when everyone was mad about studying film, Yellow Door was their own cinematheque and film school, and above all, an ideal youth community. Yellow Door: ’90s Lo-fi Film Club provides a detailed account that vividly captures the special era that heralded the renaissance of Korean film culture. The clips of masterpieces in film history embedded among anecdotes are an exciting added bonus.”
Yellow Door: ’90s Lo-fi Film Club is directed by Korean editor / filmmaker Lee Hyuk-rae, editor of the doc film Sewing Sisters previously, and formerly a teacher focusing on film editing, as well as lots of other cinema industry work. Produced by Hyung-ok Kim. This is premiering soon at the 2023 Busan Film Festival in Korea in October this fall. Netflix will then release Lee Hyuk-rae’s Yellow Door: ’90s Lo-fi Film Club doc streaming on Netflix worldwide starting on October 27th, 2023 coming soon. Who else wants to watch?
