Makoto Shinkai’s Anime Hit ‘Suzume’ Returns to US Theaters Today

Suzume and Souta and Daijin are back in theaters again!! Crunchyroll has announced that Makoto Shinkai’s beloved anime film Suzume is now playing again in theaters in the US. The film originally opened in April 2023 earlier this year, after first opening in Japan in late 2022 almost one year ago. Suzume already earned an impressive $10 million at the US box office during its initial opening in the spring earlier this year. It is also celebrated as one of the most successful modern animated films in Japan, becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 2022 in Japan in only two months. The re-release starting on October 27th will include both the English dub + the original Japanese language version with subtitles – check your local listings. Suzume is showing in over 200 theaters across the United States and select cities in Canada for a special engagement. Audiences will be able to discover or revisit the critically-lauded film, which will be available both in Japanese with English subtitles and dubbed in English. In Suzume, young Suzume and her companion, a talking chair, race to protect the world from impending disaster, guided by a mischievous cat. Inspired by the filmmaker’s observations in the wake of the 2011 earthquake that devastated Japan, this anime action adventure is a combination of hand drawn and CGI animation. Suzume is the latest film from acclaimed Japanese auteur Makoto Shinkai. Shinkai has been a visionary in the animation space for decades, with the most recent films being Your Name (2016) and Weathering With You (2019), both of which have catapulted him as a leading animation filmmaker with international viewers. Suzume originally opened in Japan on November 11th, 2022, then opened in US theaters on April 14th, 2023 earlier this year.
