“I was the right voice at the right time. It just shot me into another whole stratosphere.” Magnolia Pictures has revealed an official trailer for a unique documentary film titled Joan Baez I Am A Noise, described as “neither a conventional biopic nor a traditional concert film”. This doc initially premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and it also screened at SXSW, Hot Docs, San Francisco, and Nantucket Film Festivals. At the end of a 60-year career, legendary singer and activist Joan Baez takes an honest look back and a deep look inward as she tries to make some sense of her large, history-making life, and the personal struggles she’s kept private. Born in 1941, Baez has performed publicly for over 60 years, releasing more than 30 albums. Fluent in Spanish and English, she has also recorded songs in at least six other languages. She is an outspoken supporter of human rights and has always worked as an activist protesting in any way she can, making a real difference. She spends some of this doc talking about “quitting” all of her work now that she’s 82, and what fame means, plus everything else that she has been through in her extraordinary life.

Neither a conventional biopic nor a traditional concert film, Joan Baez I Am A Noise is a raw and intimate portrait of the legendary folk singer and activist that shifts back and forth through time as it follows Joan on her final tour and delves into her extraordinary archive, including newly discovered home movies, diaries, artwork, therapy tapes, and audio recordings. Baez is remarkably revealing about her life on and off stage – from her lifelong emotional struggles to her civil rights work with MLK and a heartbreaking romance with a young Bob Dylan. A searingly honest look at a living legend, this film is a compelling and deeply personal exploration of an iconic artist who has never told the full truth of her own life, as she experienced it herself, until now. Joan Baez I Am A Noise is co-directed by filmmakers Karen O’Connor (producer, “Frontline” director), Miri Navasky (“Frontline” director), & Maeve O’Boyle (editor, director of The 8th doc). Produced by Karen O’Connor, Miri Navasky. This initially premiered at the 2023 Berlin & SXSW Film Festivals earlier this year. Magnolia Pics will debut the Joan Baez I Am A Noise doc in select US theaters + on VOD starting October 6th, 2023 this fall. Visit the film’s official site. Is anyone interested?
