“I’m out here to hunt buffalo… haul back their hides, and sell them!! When we’re done, we’ll sure have something to show for it.” Sony Pictures has revealed the official trailer for Butcher’s Crossing, a western thriller arriving in theaters this October. This actually premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, with stops at the Rome, Chicago, Lone Star, Ostend, Glasgow, and Manchester Film Festivals as well. A frontier epic about an Ivy League drop-out as he travels deep into the Colorado wilderness, where he joins a team of buffalo hunters on a journey that puts his life and sanity at risk. Adapted from the highly acclaimed novel by John Williams. Set in the 1870s, the unsettling story is said to “dismantle the myths of modern America.” Nicolas Cage stars as Miller, with Fred Hechinger, Xander Berkeley, Rachel Keller, plus Jeremy Bobb and Oscar nominee Paul Raci. It looks like a harrowing tale of survival and guilt as this young guy comes to realize how awful this buffalo hunting life really is. All those poor buffalo senselessly slaughtered…

Based on the seminal novel by John Edward Williams, Gabe Polsky’s epic frontier adventure, Butcher’s Crossing, is a riveting commentary on human nature, ambition, masculinity, and man’s relationship to his natural environment. Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage stars in a gritty story about buffalo hunters in the Old West. Will Andrews (Fred Hechinger) has left Harvard to find adventure. He teams up with Miller (Cage), a mysterious frontiersman offering an unprecedented number of buffalo pelts in a secluded valley. Their crew must survive an arduous journey where the harsh elements will test everyone’s resolve, leaving their sanity on a knife’s edge. Butcher’s Crossing is directed by American filmmaker Gabe Polsky, director of the film The Motel Life, and also the docs Red Army, In Search of Greatness, and Red Penguins previously. The screenplay is written by Gabe Polsky and Liam Satre-Meloy, based on the book of the same name by John Williams (not the composer). This initially premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year. Sony releases Butcher’s Crossing in US theaters starting October 20th, 2023 this fall. Who’s down?
