“Every animal has the right to be respected.” Gravitas Ventures has posted their official trailer for an indie thriller from Belgium titled Liberty, an English-language story about an animal rights activist. Availalbe in the US on VOD this fall. Directed by Phil De Witte, the film features a “breakout performance” by Nicholas Michael McGovern as Matt. An idealistic park guide holds six strangers captive, treating them like caged animals, to deliver his chilling message of freedom to the world. As his human hostages run the gamut from confusion and disbelief to anger and hostility to grief and despair, our anti-hero compares their mental and physical breakdown to those of wild animals struggling in captivity. Liberty is a movie about animal rights, but its central theme is freedom – making it especially timely and relevant to a global audience. Liberty’s unique storyline draws a powerful parallel between animal rights, respect for our fellow humans, and the freedoms we too often take for granted. Liberty, a thriller, tells the story of Matt Robinson (Nicholas Michael McGovern), a young Animal Park Guide who feels a deep connection with nature and the local wildlife where he lives. He takes tourists on day excursions to discover the beauty of the land around them and the animals who live freely on it. But our young hero is also an idealist, an activist for animal rights, in conflict with man, who locks up and imprisons animals for commercial and entertainment purposes. His deep love for animals and dedication to helping free those in captivity leads him to make impulsive and illegal actions. Liberty is both written and directed by Belgian filmmaker Phil De Witte (aka Philippe De Witte), making his second film after The Benefits of Yoga for Children previously, plus a few other short films. Produced by Michel Gouzée de Harven, Jean-Christophe Van den Berg, Yves Merlin, & Michael Whalen.
