“The only one who gets to decide if I’m through – is me!” Netflix has revealed the official trailer for Nyad, which is set for both a theatrical and streaming releasing coming up this fall. This recently premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival last weekend to mostly positive reviews, and it’s playing next at the Toronto, Hamptons, and London Film Festivals. Annette Bening, Jodie Foster, and Rhys Ifans all star in NYAD to tell a remarkable true story of athlete Diana Nyad who, at the age of 60 and with the help of her best friend & coach, commits to achieving her life-long dream: a 110-mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida. It really happened! It’s also the first narrative feature made by the Oscar-winning documentary filmmakers Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, known for Meru, Free Solo, The Rescue, and this year’s Wild Life (all great films). The cast also includes Ethan Jones Romero, Luke Cosgrove, Jeena Yi, and Eric T. Miller. I wasn’t sure I’d be impressed by this, but whoa, it looks fantastic. Want to see it on the big screen.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi’s Nyad, from YouTube:
A remarkable true story of tenacity, friendship and the triumph of the human spirit, “NYAD” recounts a riveting chapter in the life of world-class athlete Diana Nyad. Three decades after giving up marathon swimming in exchange for a prominent career as a sports journalist, at the age of 60, Diana (Bening) becomes obsessed with completing an epic swim that always eluded her: the 110 mile trek from Cuba to Florida, often referred to as the “Mount Everest” of swims. Determined to become the first person to finish the swim without a shark cage, Diana goes on a thrilling, four-year journey with her best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll (Jodie Foster) and a dedicated sailing team. Nyad is directed by acclaimed doc filmmakers Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, making their first narrative feature after the doc films Meru, Free Solo, The Rescue, Return to Space and Wild Life previously. The screenplay is by Julia Cox, based on the book “Find A Way” by Diana Nyad. Produced by Andrew Lazar and Teddy Schwarzman. Netflix opens Nyad in select US theaters on October 20th, 2023, then streaming on Netflix starting November 3rd.
