“It’s like a trap door to hell opens up everywhere you tread!” Sony Classics has debuted a funny final 60-second trailer for the British comedy Wicked Little Letters, opening in US theaters at the end of March. This “scandalously sweary” film from filmmaker Thea Sharrock (Me Before You and The One & Only Ivan) needs a proper trailer because it’s a curse a minute in this comedy and they can’t usually put this in a regular trailer. Let the F bombs fly!! Release the vulgarity!! When people in Littlehampton – including conservative local Edith – begin to receive letters full of hilariously harsh profanities, rowdy Irish migrant Rose is charged with the crime. Suspecting something is amiss, the town’s women investigate. Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley star as Edith and Rose, respectively, with Timothy Spall, Gemma Jones, Lolly Adefope, and Anjana Vasan. Positive reviews state: “The central pairing of Buckley and Colman is clearly the swear-off of the century, like a home-counties rumble in the jungle, but Wicked Little Letters has just as much else to recommend it.” I laughed at the last tussle between Edith and Rose in this trailer – more of that, please! Ha.

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a dark and absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger than fiction true story, the film follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and her fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The sweary anonymous letters quickly prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women – led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) – begin to investigate the crime themselves, they come to suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all. Wicked Little Letters is directed by English theater director / filmmaker Thea Sharrock, director of the films Me Before You and The One & Only Ivan previously. The screenplay is written by Jonny Sweet. Produced by Graham Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Peter Czernin, Ed Sinclair, Jo Wallett. This initially premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year. Studiocanal opens Wicked Little Letters in the UK on February 23rd, 2024. SPC debuts in the US in limited theaters (NY & LA) on March 29th, wide in April.
