“I do what I do because I want to be loved!” Shudder has revealed an official US trailer for the documentary film titled Dario Argento Panico (also called just Panico). “Experience the world of Dario Argento like never before.” This originally premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last year in the “Venice Classics” section. It is the first biopic doc ever dedicated to Argento. The film zooms in on titular Italian filmmaker Dario Argento as he finishes writing the script for his last feature in a hotel as a film crew shoots a movie about him. “It is an immersive deep dive into the creative process and life of Argento and features exclusive interviews with the legendary filmmaker and insight from other acclaimed directors like Gaspar Noé, Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn about his impact on the horror genre and generations of other directors.” Argento is now 83 years old and continues to make films – Dark Glasses was out in 2022, and this film covers a bit of the making of that one. If you’ve never seen any of his films, it is always a good time to start watching – Suspiria, or Inferno, or Deep Red, or Tenebrae. This doc will be on Shudder in February.

“Within hotel rooms, sheltered from the outside world, Dario Argento created his most acclaimed films. Today, in a hotel room in Rome’s countryside, he is writing his last. This time, however, he is not alone. Today, in agreement with his agent, he decides to return to a hotel to conclude his new script and to be interviewed, filmed, followed by a crew that is shooting a film about him. Inside this structure, Argento does not initially feel at ease, struggling to find tranquility both to finish the writing of his film, and to confide in who is interviewing him. But the demon of cinema, who never abandoned him, followed him up there and will push him, once again, to give himself totally.” Dario Argento Panico is directed by Italian filmmaker Simone Scafidi, director of the films La Festa, Eva Braun, Sexual Scandals, and docs Zanetti Story and Fulci for Fake previously. Produced by Daniele Bolcato and Giada Mazzoleni. This first premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. Shudder debuts Dario Argento Panico streaming February 2nd, 2024.
