“All I want is the artifact!” And everyone else wants money. Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for an indie ensemble comedy film called Americana, from writer / director Tony Tost making his feature debut. This originally premiered in 2023 at the SXSW Film Festival, but it never played anywhere else after that fest and has been waiting for release ever since. Lionsgate will finally drop this one in theaters in August this summer. When a rare Lakota Ghost Shirt falls onto the black market in a small South Dakota town, the lives of local outsiders & outcasts violently intertwine. Some seek fortune and some seek personal freedom, while others simply want to return the artifact to its proper tribal home. The film’s cast features Sydney Sweeney as a shy waitress, Paul Walter Hauser as a military vet, Halsey, Simon Rex as an antiquities dealer, Eric Dane as a ruthless criminal, and Zahn McClarnon as the leader of an indigenous group. This looks seriously kooky & awkward, maybe there’s a good reason it hasn’t been released in the last two years.

A gallery of dynamic characters clash over the possession of a rare Native American artifact in this wildly entertaining modern-day western. After the artifact falls onto the black market, a shy waitress with big dreams (Sydney Sweeney) teams up with a lovelorn military veteran (Paul Walter Hauser) to try and gain possession of it, putting them in the crosshairs of a ruthless criminal (Eric Dane) working on behalf of a Western antiquities dealer (Simon Rex). Bloodshed ensues when others join the battle, including the leader of an indigenous group (Zahn McClarnon) and a desperate woman fleeing her mysterious past (Halsey). Americana is written and directed by American filmmaker Tony Tost, making his feature directorial debut after writing for “Longmire”, “Damnation”, and “The Terror”, plus exec producing “Poker Face“. Produced by Alex Saks. This initially premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival a few years ago. Lionsgate will debut Tost’s Americana film in US theaters starting on August 22nd, 2025 later this summer. Anyone into this?
