Take a quick trip into the past to explore legendary monster puppeteer Jim Henson’s archives. Throughout October, Adam Savage’s Tested YouTube channel has been posting videos from their visit to the Henson shop in NYC. One of the best videos is his time spent with The Jim Henson Legacy looking at old archival items while talking about Henson with vice-president Karen Falk. One of Jim Henson’s Creature Shops is located in Queens, NY, and it’s situated right next door to the “Henson Legacy”, the organization dedicated to preserving his history and managing his archives. Savage looks through old artwork and sketches by Jim Henson, while discussing his early work in the 1960s, before he started Sesame Street. As with most of these videos, Savage is clearly geeking out digging into to all this old stuff, and that’s part of the joy in watching this. It’s wonderful to revisit & re-enter the mind of Jim Henson taking a closer look at all of these drawings.
Thanks to our friends at GeekTyrant for the tip on this video. Original intro from YouTube: “In New York, the Jim Henson Legacy shares space with the Creature Shop. Adam Savage talks to archives director and Legacy vice-president Karen Falk about how the two inspire each other (including with the building of puppets for Puppet Up) and sees some very early sketches by Muppets creator Jim Henson, who imbued so much personality and function with just a few lines.” Published on Adam Savage’s Tested YouTube channel. This isn’t the first time they’ve made videos with the Henson team – he also attempted puppeteering with their puppets, and he also learned about puppet making in the Creature Shop. We’ve featured other videos from Adam Savage’s Tested channel, including making an original Blade Runner ID badge prop, and How a 100-Year-Old Animated Film is Restored.
