Even if you don’t know much about fire signs, chances are you know if you have one in your life. That’s because the three fire signs—Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius—are much like their ruling element; they’re bright, they shine, they draw attention…but they also can burn. Thankfully, Tali Edut, one half of The AstroTwins, the official astrologers for ELLE, is willing to guide us through their flame-filled world. Grab your sunglasses, and keep scrolling.
Fire Sign Dates
Aries: March 21–April 19
Leo: July 23–August 22
Sagittarius: November 22–December 21
Fire Sign Traits
The good: Fire signs are passionate, creative, playful, and unafraid to be the first. “They get things energized,” Edut says. “They bring warmth and light, and they get everybody inspired.” On the other hand, they can also be destructive, inconsiderate, and selfish. “They don’t always know their lane and can bulldoze people. They can be super dramatic and always need to be the center of attention, and it can be exhausting. Cough, Leo.”
If you have a fire sign for your sun sign…
…your essence is a fiery personality. “You’re going to be warm and independent and excitable and passionate,” Edut says. “Even if you don’t show it, that’s who you are left to your own devices.”
If you have a fire sign for your rising sign…
…you outwardly exude a take-charge, flamboyant energy. “It may be covering up some other things,” Edut explains. “But that’s how you’ll read [to others].”
If you have a fire sign for your moon sign…
…your emotions take on a fiery temperament. “You may be quick to react, quick to take things personally, quick to fall in love,” she says. “You get excited fast, and you burn out fast, and your feelings can definitely blaze up and then die out quickly. There’s a lot of passion there.”
Fire Sign Compatibility
As for which signs play well with fire, air signs are the easiest match. “There’s a friendly dynamic between them,” Edut says, though fire and water can be a passionate combo. “It can get really steamy, but they can also put each other out. Water likes to go deep, and fire is blazing hot, so it can be tricky.” Fire signs can also scare earth signs with their intensity. “Fire can definitely burn out earth, and earth can put too much structure in for fire.”
Aries Traits
Now let’s get into each individual sign. First up, is Aries, the cardinal fire sign, a.k.a. the ultimate leader. Case in point: Aries are the first sign of the Zodiac. “They’re ahead of the curve with everything,” Edut says. “They’re supremely confident. They’re not trying to be original, but they’re just natural trailblazers.”
Leo Traits
Leos are the fixed fire signs and the nurturing ones who hold it all down. “They’re natural leaders but in a very responsible way,” Edut says. “Leo’s are the kings and queens of, this is my realm. I’m taking care of it.”
Sagittarius Traits
Last but not least is the mutable fire sign: Sagittarius. These folks are our world travelers, our big thinkers, and their fire spreads far and wide. “They’re here. They’re there. They’re everywhere,” she explains. “They’re the ambassadors who go out and get big ideas from all over the world and share them with everyone.”
Rapid-Fire Questions
The role a fire sign plays in a friend group?
Edut: They are the ones who always have the fun idea. “Hey, why don’t we all go to Paris?” They get everybody out to play.
An ideal day off for a fire sign?
Edut: An ideal day off for a fire sign is one where it’s warm enough to go outside and soak up whatever it is. They need to be free to roam, no obligations, no one they have to call or answer to, where they can just go out and actually meet new people and see pretty, sparkly things.
What’s the next hobby a fire sign should try?
Edut: An art medium like painting or sculpture. Something where they can get really messy and put their hands into it and have a full-bodied artistic experience.
