Kino Lorber has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie film from Tunisia titled Four Daughters, the latest from acclaimed Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania (also of and Beauty and the Dogs & The Man Who Sold His Skin). This premiered in competition at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and it also screens at the London Film Festival next. Winner of four prizes including the L’Oeil d’Or (Best Documentary) when it screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Four Daughters is a compelling portrait of five women and a unique and ambitious work of nonfiction storytelling that explores the nature of memory, the weight of inherited trauma, and the ties that bind mothers and daughters. Between light and darkness stands Olfa – a Tunisian woman who is the mother of four daughters. One day, her two older daughters disappear. To fill in their absence, the director invites professional actresses and invents a unique cinema experience that will lift the veil on Olfa and her daughters’ life stories. An intimate journey of hope, rebellion, violence, transmission and sisterhood that will question the very foundations of our societies. 🇹🇳
Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Kaouther Ben Hania’s Four Daughters, from KL’s YouTube:
This riveting exploration of rebellion, memory, and sisterhood reconstructs the story of Olfa Hamrouni and her four daughters, unpacking a complex family history through intimate interviews and with artful reenactments to examine how the Tunisian woman’s two eldest were radicalized. Casting professional actresses as the missing daughters, along with acclaimed Egyptian-Tunisian actress Hend Sabri as Olfa, the film restages pivotal moments in the family’s life. These scenes are interwoven with confessions and reflections from Olfa and her younger daughters, offering the women agency to tell their own story and capturing moments of joy, loss, violence, and heartache. Four Daughters, also known as Les Filles d’Olfa in French, is both written and directed by Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, director of the films Beauty and the Dogs and The Man Who Sold His Skin previously, plus docs and short films. This initially premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival this year in the Main Competition. Kino Lorber will debut Four Daughters in select US theaters starting October 27th, 2023 this fall.
