Peacock has revealed the release date for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie along with a batch of first look photos.
Tony Shalhoub’s return as Detective Monk in the 90-minute film will premiere on the streaming platform on December 8th. Check out a gallery of images from Mr. Monk’s Last Case below.
Per the official logline, the movie will see Monk resume his work to “solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.” Original Monk costars Ted Levine, Traylor Howard, Jason Gray-Stanford, Melora Hardin, and Hector Elizondo will all reprise their roles from the series, with Caitlin McGee coming aboard as Molly Evans and James Purefoy as Rick Eden.
The project comes from the original creative team of creator/executive producer/writer Andy Breckman, executive producer David Hoberman, and executive producer/director Randy Zisk, who shared a new joint statement about the film.
“It’s been 12 years since the world has seen a fresh installment of Monk. The world has changed mightily in those intervening years and Monk 2023 reflects the changing world,” they said. “We’re so delighted to have made a movie version of Monk, and we are thrilled that every one of our stars were so enthusiastic about coming back.”
The trio continued, “But in coming back, we wanted to do a film that was worthy of our legacy. Mr. Monk’s Last Case is a story that is powerful, emotional, funny, heartwarming, and has something to say about the human condition. And it will be both familiar and surprising.”
Monk ran for eight seasons on USA Network from 2002 to 2009. The series picked up eight Primetime Emmy Awards, with Shalhoub winning three Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. In 2020, the cast reunited for a short film titled Mr. Monk Shelters in Place, in which each character showed how they were faring during the pandemic.
