A Tribute To Dr. Frank-N-Furter

Guest writer Sarah Sinn delves deep into the psychology of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Tim Curry’s iconic character from The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

The horror community seems to be getting hit a lot this year as we lost another amazing person recently: The very talented Tim Curry. He was in everything, all genres such as comedies (Clue), animation (Fern Gully), he was in musicals ( Annie), fantasy movies (Legend), action movies (Congo), and even did voice work for cartoons (such as The Wild Thornberrys). Hell, the guy even worked with the Muppets for Muppets Treasure Island. How cool is that? But for us horror fans he is the original Pennywise from the TV miniseries IT that terrified an entire generation into their fear of clowns. And he played Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the cult classic, horror/rock/musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. To many of us? This is how we were first introduced to Tim Curry or best remember him as because Frank-N-Furter is so iconic, means something to many of us, and has a special place in our hearts.

Like I did with Reggie Bannister, I would like to pay tribute to Tim Curry by doing a deep dive, psychological analysis of Frank-N-Furter, a character I cosplayed as when I went to the Joe Bob Jamboree in 2024, a character that not only means a lot to so many people but means something to me.

We are introduced to Frank-N-Furter in the movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show. A musical about a couple, Brad and Janet, who have some car trouble one dark and stormy night and seek shelter in a gothic castle in the middle of nowhere. Once there, they are introduced to Frank-N-Furter and his companions while they host a wild party. Chaos and sex and betrayal ensue through amazing songs and wonderful dance numbers.

Now, Frank-N-Furter is a sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania who just wants to drink, be merry, have sex, and be free to express himself. A Dr. Frankenstein like character, determined to build himself a man (with blond hair and a tan), and the host of this lavish party we see going on. And the man can make quite an entrance. We first see him as he descends down an elevator, wearing a very sexy outfit that consists of a corset with matching undies, garter belt with stockings, a pearl necklace, and fishnet gloves. His hair looking fabulous and his makeup on point as he starts to sing Sweet Transvestite to Brad and Janet. Not only is he good-looking, sexy, and charming he is also incredibly smart as well since he is also a scientist.

Tim Curry — the word
Tim Curry — the word “legend” doesn’t even BEGIN to describe him.

OK, so, for this psychological analysis, I could go in depth about the fact that Frank-N-Furter is manipulating, jealous, and probably suffering from narcissistic personality disorder. And, yes, he is all those things because as human beings, we all have positives qualities about ourselves as well as what we need to work on to better ourselves. So does Frank-N-Furter. But for me, he is so much more than that and I feel like he has more positives about him than negatives and probably has experienced things that can explain why he is the way he is.

Frank-N-Furter is a complicated character, I won’t sugar coat it. But he’s also sympathetic, emotional, and charismatic. When I think about Frank-N-Furter, I first think of the human psyche: the id, ego, and superego. And, yes, I’m going to defend his superego because most people think his superego is nonexistent. I feel that he has a semi-balanced psyche and his superego just works on a different plane. In short, the id is instincts, ego is reality (and mediator between the id and superego), and the superego is morality. Frank-N-Furter has a strong Id. He gives in to the pleasure principle, his desires, his urges, and seeks instant gratification. He wants the pleasures of life, and he isn’t afraid to seek his desires in order to satisfy his urges so he can have instant gratification. Frank-N-Furter also has a strong ego. The man is intelligent, has problem-solving skills, can think logically, and is well organized. He is a scientist who, like Dr. Frankenstein, is interested in creating life. He builds Rocky and brings him to life.

When I see Frank-N-Furter, I see someone who is lonely who just wants to feel a sense of belonging, craves it. A person who wants connection with others and intimacy. A person who is afraid of being alone because they have that fear of abandonment and rejection always in the back of their minds.

Now, I will say his weakest is his superego. OK, so his sense of right and wrong tends to go with what is right for him. But he also doesn’t give in to social norms. He is not afraid to be himself, live his life how he feels, and says “to hell” with what societal norms and expectations are. However, I do feel like he does care about his companions and friends but doesn’t know how to show it. Probably because he was never taught how to care for others or taught how to show love appropriately. So, even though his superego is the weakest of his psyche, doesn’t mean it’s gone. His superego is still working but is overpowered by his id and ego. His moral compass might not always point north but he hasn’t completely lost his sense of morality.

Next I would like to talk about attachment theory and how this applies to Frank-N-Furter. This theory was developed by John Bowlby. He was a psychiatrist who was interested in child development. While observing infants/small children, he noticed differences in the way they acted when their caretaker leaves them. His theory helped him understand that a bond between child and caretaker is important for child development and how this attachment and bond that they learn in infancy is carried into adulthood.

There are four attachment styles: 1. Secure attachment; Children are distressed when their caretaker leaves but can be soothed by another caretaker and the child is happy when their caretaker returns. In adulthood, these people have trust in others, understand healthy boundaries, and make strong, meaningful connections with others. 2. Anxious attachment; Children are anxious and distressed when the caretaker leaves and is upset and resistant when the caretaker returns. In adulthood, these people tend to crave intimacy and connection with others, have a fear of abandonment and rejection, and tend to be dependent on others and can be seen as jealous and clingy. 3. Avoidant attachment; The child doesn’t care when their caretaker leaves and avoids them when they return. In adulthood, these people try to avoid intimacy and connections with others, have a fear of being vulnerable, and have a hard time trusting others and expressing their feelings. And last is disorganized/fearful attachment; Children have a mix of behaviors when their caretaker leaves and may fear and avoid when their caretaker returns (this attachment style is linked to trauma). In adulthood, these people tend to have low self-esteem and lack confidence, have a hard time trusting others relying only on themselves, and have a hard time self-regulating, regulating their emotions.

When it comes to Frank-N-Furter, I believe he presents with traits from anxious attachment. He wants connection with others, affiliation, a sense of belonging. He also wants intimacy with others. He wants that closeness to someone in order to feel love on a deeper level. He surrounds himself with companions and “lovers” and friends because he fears abandonment and rejection. Yes, he has confidence, self-esteem, and is comfortable with who he is but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a fear of abandonment and rejection. It explains why he needs so many people surrounding him … so he can feel important, like he belongs, that he’s wanted, a sense of validation. When I see Frank-N-Furter, I see someone who is lonely who just wants to feel a sense of belonging, craves it. A person who wants connection with others and intimacy. A person who is afraid of being alone because they have that fear of abandonment and rejection always in the back of their minds.

Feels like anxious attachment to me.
Feels like anxious attachment to me.

Last, I’d like to talk about the dispositional motives, needs theory. A concept and theory developed by Henry Murray who believed that some personality traits are based off of certain needs and motives. Murray understood that humans have basic physiological needs, but we may lean towards specific needs at a higher level. The needs go as follows: Need for achievement; The ability to achieve specific goals one set for themselves and overcoming obstacles. Need for power; The ability to have influence and an impact over others, and a sense of control. Need for affiliation; The ability to form connections with others, friendships and relationships with other people. And the Need for intimacy; The ability to form a close relationship, open communication, and closeness to another person. People may sway towards certain needs over others or have a balance of all four.

With Frank-N-Furter, I think his personality needs all four. And at times, some needs are more important than others but for him to feel a sense of fulfillment, all four still need to be met. He has a need for achievement. He’s intelligent, knowledgeable, has problem-solving skills, and a scientist (a mad scientist but still a scientist) who conducts experiments, setting goals and trying to obtain these goals. When we meet him, he is building a man with blond hair and tan, he’s building himself a companion similar to Bride of Frankenstein. He has a need for power. He is a leader and likes being in charge. He enjoys people looking up to him and he wants to be admired. He enjoys having an influence over others whether it’s positive or negative. He has a need for affiliation. He enjoys being surrounded by companions, friends, and forming relationships with others. Maybe he sees them as a means to an end and he’s just using them to give him a sense of fulfillment, but for me, what Frank-N-Furter really craves is connection and wants a sense of belonging.

Maybe he just doesn’t understand that relationships are a balance and that you just can’t use people for your own sense of fulfillment. And he has a need for intimacy. This is why he is building himself an intimate companion. He has slept with many people, Brad and Janet, Eddie, and I’m assuming Columbia, Rif Raff, and Magenta too. Everyone is drawn to his charisma and charm. But Frank-N-Furter wants more than casual flings. He wants intimacy, a close connection with one person and so he decides to build himself a companion because everyone else he has been with intimately hasn’t filled is cup. They haven’t given him that closeness he craves to have with someone so that’s why he decides to create a companion, so he can finally feel a sense of being loved by another on a deeper, more intimate level.

Listen, Frank-N-Furter was an iconic role for Tim Curry, a character that introduced many of us, not only to The Rocky Horror Picture Show but to his amazing acting chops, a versatile actor. What I love about Frank-N-Furter is that he was everyone. Didn’t matter if you were; male, female, gay, lesbian, straight, non-binary, trans, that character spoke to all of us and connected to us in one way or another. For myself, Frank-N-Furter taught me that it’s OK to be assertive in the things you want, the pleasures of life, and that it’s OK to express yourself, and always be yourself. Frank-N-Furter was relatable on so many levels, showing the world that it’s OK to have goals, dreams, to be ourselves, to be able to express ourselves. Like Frank-N-Furter said, “Don’t dream it, be it” and I hold those words close, especially now.

“Don’t dream it, be it.”

Frank-N-Furter is a reminder to all that horror is healing.

For this article, I decided to add quotes from friends I reached out to because Frank-N-Furter meant the world to a lot of us.

Rocky Horror, specifically Tim Curry’s performance, inspired a young me into being who I was. That it was ok to accept who you are and to hell with what others think or what they want you to be. To not Dream it. To be it! (Dawn, from Michigan)

Frank-N-Furter means the world to me. From the moment he first came on the screen, I was entranced and I felt seen and safe. As someone that was a social outcast and a loner as a teen, RHPS and Frank-N-Furter made me feel less alone. I could be completely 100% myself thanks to him and he has brought me so much joy and happiness and to embrace and love life. He helped save my life and he brought people into my life I care for so deeply and love so much that I don’t know how I could live without them (Josh, from Texas)

I knew I was transgender by the time I was 6, even though I didn’t have the word for it yet. I knew by the time I was 14 that I was bisexual, though I now know that pansexuality is more fitting for me. I was tested from my first year in school to determine why I did so well in school but so poorly at fitting into expected social norms. I didn’t see Rocky Horror Picture Show until I was 18. On that night, Tim [Curry] showed me the ecstasy that being pansexual, poly, non-binary, and neurodivergent can bring when you just stop giving a damn what the world thinks about it (Ruby, from Pennsylvania)

I first watched Rocky Horror when I was in college. I had been raised very conservative and wasn’t the most open and welcoming people back then. My friends/coworkers convinced me to dress up and go see the full production at our local indie theater. Dressing as Brad in underwear and a lab coat, I watched Tim Curry be the exact opposite of every character I had seen him in and have fun. That was the start of seeing what the world can be, and how it’s ok to let go of how you were raised and find your own path. That was the start of my change into the accepting, caring, and loving ally I am today. It took time but I finally got there (Chris, from Missouri)

Don’t dream it, be it. Dr. Frank-N-Furter: What an Icon. After seeing laser lips sing ‘Time Warp’ at a local amusement park and then seeing clips on VH1 on the 20th anniversary, my curiosity was piqued. I had to know more about what this ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ was. So, I rented the movie from Mr. Movies Rentals and slid the cassette into the VCR and I was introduced to Dr. Frank-N-Furter. As the elevator descended, my mind raced. Who is that? What is that? Then I found out: It was the one and only Tim Curry. As he belted out ‘Sweet Transvestite,’ my soul was sold to the weird and I think that is the biggest lesson I pulled from both Rocky Horror and Dr. Frank: It was ok, even fun as hell, to be weird. Dr. Frank-N-Furter was someone who knew what they wanted and didn’t let anything get in their way. Get what you want in your own way and do it with style. I cried the day he passed on, and I still tear up a bit thinking about him. But, Dr. Frank-N-Furter lives on forever and is teaching new generations that it’s ok to be weird. (Tombs, From Minnesota)

Meet Sarah Sinn!

I currently live in Vermont, the state I was raised in, and I have a beautiful daughter named Hemera. I work full-time as the lead teacher of an infant room at a childcare center. Hobbies of mine are photography and cosplay (both me and my daughter). My signature cosplay is Herbert West (Re-Animator is my favorite movie) but I also cosplay as Tiffany Valentine, Quint from Jaws, Frank-n-Furter, Freddy, and soon I hope to show off my Kelly Meeker (from Halloween 4) cosplay I have been working on.

I am the host of Sinnful Sarah’s Horror Menagerie. A podcast where I dive deep, a psychological analysis to horror movies. I truly believe there is more to horror than what’s on the surface. Once you peel back those layers, there’s so much more going on. Horror is relatable. I believe that “horror is healing,” and can help many of us through various traumas and whatever life throws at us (it has helped me many times). I also believe that because there are so many subgenres within horror that everyone can enjoy the horror genre. They just have to find the subgenre that fits them. My personal favorite subgenre? Slasher flick. Give me a good ‘ol ’80s slasher any day.

I have an AA in Liberal Studies and Early Childhood Education and I graduated May of 2025 with a BA in Psychology. My goal is to pursue a Masters in the Psychology of Horror Movies. I want to teach at a University or film school. I want to educate people on the horror genre and show them that’s there more to these movies than just monsters, masked killers, gory kills, and final girls. Horror is healing, touches on Psychology and mental health issues, are social commentaries, reflect the fears of society (especially in the decade they were made in), are relatable, and most of all that horror is healing.
