Michael Keaton was out this week comparing the Beetlejuice sequel to the original. Best of all he says that it will be highly based in practical effects. Now, Jenna Ortega is spilling tea on her character Astrid Deetz. As we already know, Ortega’s character is the daughter of Lydia Deetz and is also strange and unusual.
While speaking with Vanity Fair, Ortega got a chance to talk about Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The Tim Burton-directed sequel is a return to what we loved about the first film according to a couple of its stars. Keaton and Ortega are very happy with what they have seen and that makes us all kinds of excited to see it. As long as the model town is all practical and handcrafted and not CGI I’m happy.
“I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say, but I am Lydia Deetz’s daughter, so I’ll give that away,” Ortega said. “She’s weird, but in a different way and not in the way you’d assume, I would say. The relationship between Lydia and Astrid, my character, is very important. And it’s also really strange because it’s a lot of catching up and putting the pieces together of what’s gone on in Lydia’s life since, which is nice, I think for anybody who loves the character and is excited to see her again.”
It is great to hear that Ortega is excited about a film like this being in theaters again and a whole new generation of kids able to adopt the dialogue and to start to choose to dress in black. A whole new generation of goth kids could be in the making, y’all.
“I feel like studios nowadays, of course, they want people in seats and you’ve got to do reboots or sequels or things like that to get people entwined, but to bring ‘Beetlejuice’ back — of all of the stories –is so good because people need to revisit weird, strange, off-putting stories again. We need to introduce the younger generation that’s always on the phone to new artistic and creative ideas. The weirder you get with it, the more people you can get to see it, I think will probably do a lot for film in general.” Ortega told Vanity Fair.
The synopsis for Beetlejuice went like this:
After Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes (Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Jones) and teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a rambunctious spirit whose “help” quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia.
This sounds like a great character. Plus, it will be wonderful to catch up with Lydia as well. I mean, who is Astrid’s dad? Is he still alive? So many questions!
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice arrives in theaters beginning September 5.
