Blowie Isn’t Your Average Slasher Movie

Blowie is a neo-slasher movie with a VERY novel twist.

Blowie is a neo-slasher movie with a VERY novel twist.

Blowie is a neo-slasher whodunit that REALLY pushes the envelope

I’m surprised but not surprised by the lack of media attention afforded to Blowie. It’s a neo-slasher movie with a VERY unique hook — as in, literally every actor in the film is a legitimate, bona fide, real life adult film star. Despite being a film about sex workers — with gay content creators representing virtually every character in the film, sans our one female starlet/director character — Blowie didn’t get much publicity during Pride month. I don’t think any mainstream-ish horror site reviewed it, which is reason enough for Wicked Horror to put it in the limelight.

You already know whether or not Blowie is the kind of movie for you. I mean, the name alone is going to alienate a lot of audiences, and that’s probably a good thing. Blowie is obviously a movie made for adults and adults who aren’t homophobic and not afraid of a little kink. I don’t even have to say “viewer discretion advised,” because Blowie blares that from a bullhorn within the first minute of the movie.

Blowie is the handiwork of directors Ed Aldridge, Sam Lidbetter and altSHIFT (which I’m sure is their real birth name, just like Rob Zombie.) The cast includes just half a dozen actors and practically the entire movie takes place at one location — although it is a fairly spacious manor in the U.K. countryside. It’s obviously a hyper low budget production but the cinematography looks tremendous. It’s a very glossy looking movie and the editing is great. It looks way more expensive than it is and it feels like a professional grade production. Visually and aesthetically, Blowie is impressive stuff.

Blowie is kinda like Scooby Doo, only with WAY more golden showers.
Blowie is kinda like Scooby Doo, only with WAY more golden showers.

The story is classical 1980s slasher whodunit hokum. The movie begins with a long prologue that explains how one of the “visitors” to the manor succumbed to a tragic lube accident (looooong story), with the rest of the cast vowing to cover up the death to save their own hides. It’s a motif right out of The Burning and The House on Sorority Row, only all of the conspirators are people who have OnlyFans for real. Which, naturally, brings us to the question I’m sure all of you are wondering.

I don’t know if the sex scenes in this movie are simulated or the real deal. I kinda get the feeling that most of the debauchery is staged, but considering the cast, I really wouldn’t be surprised if we got actual man on man mayhem in this movie. That said, the content isn’t that extreme, which is something that really surprised me. Yes, we do have male and female frontal nudity and we have some … niche … activities going on throughout the movie. But Blowie is obviously anything BUT a genuine p*rno movie, let alone a hardcore one. It’s a classical slasher movie, only with a lot of hot, buff dudes kissing each other and occasionally taking number ones on each other because some pervert on the internet PayPal’ed them a couple of hundred dollars to do it. There’s nothing here patently more explicit than anything you see in something like the 2009 My Bloody Valentine remake, but if sweaty man love isn’t your thing, rest assured, this movie has a lot of it.

As the only female in the movie, Kali Sudhra obviously stands out. She kinda plays the proverbial tie that binds in the film and gets to deliver the movie’s one truly poignant bit of social commentary in a scene where she talks about the legal persecution of sex workers online. You keep thinking she’s going to be something kinda resembling a traditional final girl, but you should expect a movie called Blowie to always subvert your expectations.

Sudhra Kali isn't just the "final girl" of Blowie, she's the ONLY girl of Blowie.
Sudhra Kali isn’t just the “final girl” of Blowie, she’s the ONLY girl of Blowie.

The rest of the cast sorta comes off as surprisingly one-dimensional. Sure, there’s a little personality clash between the housemates, but their dialogue is largely interchangeable and you recognize early on that they’re all there to be cannon fodder and little else. There’s a teased plot twist about two-thirds of the way through the movie that seems like Blowie might be shifting from a slasher flick to a different type of horror subgenre, but I’m not going to spoil it for those of you who haven’t seen it yet. With or without that teased plot twist happening, though, Blowie is definitely an old school slasher mystery through and through, if not thematically then certainly spiritually.

I’m not going to lie and say I wasn’t somewhat disappointed by the grande finale of Blowie. It’s a film that seems like it has a VERY obvious killer and although we have a couple of red herrings to throw us off our trail, the big “reveal” is pretty much a foregone conclusion. There are some twists and turns along the way, but once the murderous stuff begins Blowie totally telegraphs its ending.

As for the gore and guts, again, Blowie is nowhere near as extreme as I anticipated. Sure, we get some bloodshed and a gnarly kill or two, but there’s nothing in the film that would put it anywhere close to something like Evil Dead Burn in terms of per capita violence. For that matter, I’m not even sure its total blood spillage is on par with Obsession. Anyone going into Blowie anticipating a paint-the-walls-red-with-extra-chunky-spaghetti-sauce jubilee is bound to be disappointed; it has a few moments of gruesomeness, but nothing too over the top.

Probably the weirdest thing about Blowie is that it doesn’t really strive to make any kind of cogent social points at all (outside of that one aforementioned monologue, of course.) It’s not really a movie about homophobia or health care or free expression rights, nor is it a movie that’s quick to condemn online weirdos (who usually hold hypocritical political views about the very same people they’re “fawning” over) or the people and companies who profit off internet adult content creators. It’s literally just another Friday the 13th variation, with the main difference being that about five-sixths of its cast are all gay adult film stars. Some people will like that, some people will really dislike it. And there’s not much room in the middle for centrist opinions.

I really wanted to Google what this thing is called, but is it really worth the risk of leaving it in my search history?

Blowie is not a perfect movie by any stretch. There are some issues with the script and the acting is perhaps too subdued and staid most of the time. But it feels different and tries to do something new-ish with a formula that’s been done to death at this point. Even when the film isn’t successful, it still maintains a unique atmosphere and air that you just don’t see in that many contemporary horror pictures. Blowie might be a case of a slasher movie having more style than substance; but hey, at least it’s got a style you’ll remember for a while.
