Charli xcx Joins Martin Scorseses Gothic Horror Film What Happens at Night

Charli xcx (Faces of Death) is getting back into the horror game, as Variety reports that the pop star is set to cameo in Martin Scorsese‘s gothic horror film, What Happens at Night.

Oh, hadn’t heard that the legendary filmmaker is making a new genre movie? Yes, it’s true, and yes, you should get excited. Charli xcx coming on board certainly helps.

We’ve written extensively here at Dread about Charli’s horror fandom, so it’s great to see her continue to line up projects in the genre after her appearance in this year’s Faces of Death. Especially one as prestigious as this.

Charli joins co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in the film, said to be in the vein of The Shiningand Twin Peaks.

What Happens at Night is described as a dream-like story following a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby.

“They check into a cavernous, largely deserted hotel where they encounter an enigmatic cast of characters, including a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman, and a charismatic faith healer.

“Nothing is quite as it seems in this strange, frozen world. As the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about themselves and the life they’ve built together.”

Scorsese reteaming with his Shutter Island star, DiCaprio, has me all sorts of excited for the potential here. A dreary, gothic horror movie set during the winter and with that cast? Be still, my frozen heart.

Patricia Clarkson, Mads Mikkelsen, and Jared Harris also star alongside Welker White, a Scorsese collaborator on projects including Goodfellas, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Irishman, and Killers of the Flower Moon.

What Happens at Night is an adaptation of the novel by Peter Cameron and hails from Apple Studios, made in partnership with StudioCanal.

Here’s a first look photo of DiCaprio and Lawrence in the film shared by Scorsese back in March.
