Wicked Horror Remembers Tim Curry

Legendary actor Tim Curry died at age 80 on August 25, 2026.

Legendary actor Tim Curry died at age 80 on August 25, 2026.

Paying tribute to Tim Curry, an iconic actor among iconic actors

It’s going to be a few years, even a few decades, before we truly grasp how impressive the resume of Tim Curry was. To just have one iconic role is something that eludes most actors for a lifetime. In his 80 years on planet earth, he racked up at least half a dozen, if not more.

Curry’s passing on August 25 wasn’t an out of the blue shock. We’d all seen the convention photos over the last few years — physically, you could tell Curry wasn’t long for this world. But actually witnessing it happen still feels unreal. Only mortals die, and Curry simply felt like celluloid immortality made flesh.

Forget a memorial article, entire books can (and have) been written about some of Curry’s singular performances. His roles in It and The Rocky Horror Picture Show aren’t just stellar displays of thespian prowess, they’re unshakable, ineffaceable pop cultural gods. Pennywise the Clown and Dr. Frank-N-Furter are more than cult movie characters — they’re social archetypes, symbolic representations of things far larger in life than just a simple movie. Curry is an actor who can rightly say he traumatized and titillated an entire generation of movie-goers — and usually, at the very same time.

We could write series of articles about Curry’s horror and horror-adjacent roles. Outside of It and The Rocky Horror Picture Show there’s Clue, Legend and even Ferngully: The Last Rain Forest. But before we delve into any of those obvious properties, I think it’s important to note the totality of Curry’s oeuvre, from the theater stage to video game consoles.

Tim Curry's portrayal of Pennywise the Clown in 1990's It mini-series is about as iconic as it gets.
Tim Curry’s portrayal of Pennywise the Clown in 1990’s It mini-series is about as iconic as it gets.

People kind of forget that The Rocky Horror Show is based on an actual play — and that three years before the film adaptation, Curry was already portraying Frank-N-Furter in front of live audiences. We talk about actors embodying certain characters all the time, but Curry WAS his iconic Rocky Horror character. Nobody else on the planet could create what he created as an actor. The character may have already existed in the minds of a script writer, but Curry made it his own and breathed his own breath into Frank; his performance not only brought the character to life, it single-handedly transformed the role into a transcendent figure. People who have never seen Rocky Horror and never will see it can still picture Curry’s character vividly in their heads. Curry’s presence, gravitas and flat-out charisma was that powerful.

As good as Curry’s motion picture work may be — and trust me, it was BRILLIANT — probably his overall best performances were in productions of Titus Andronicus and Danton’s Death only a a handful of people in the U.K. were lucky to catch in the ‘70s. So many of those performances were never recorded and are completely lost to history. To truly appreciate Curry as an actor, you have to have seen his live stage work in My Favorite Year and Spamalot. They’re well worth tracking down on the internet, even if you have to take the off the beaten paths to find them.

Tim Curry was a rare actor in the sense that he could completely subsume himself in a role yet still show off his own idiosyncratic charms, even when he was caked in pounds of prosthetics and makeup. He never seemed to play himself in any of his roles, but you could see a little bit of Tim Curry, the actual human being, in everything he was in. If you grew up in the ‘90s, the dude was a ubiquitous part of your childhood. Home Alone 2, Congo, The Shadow, Muppet Treasure Island, the guy was EVERYWHERE. In hindsight, it’s kind of fun to go back and revisit all of the movies, TV shows and video games you had no idea Curry was a part of. Rugrats, Tales From The Crypt, Captain Planet, Command and Conquer — his entertainment footprint was deep, indeed.

Beneath all of the make-up, I assure you Tim Curry is in there somewhere.
Beneath all of the make-up, I assure you Tim Curry is in there somewhere.

That’s sort of the cosmic beauty of Curry’s career — no matter who you are or what you’re into, you probably have at least one or two iconic performances that will always stick with you. If you don’t remember him from It and Rocky Horror, you probably remember him from The Wild Thornberries and Jimmy Neutron. And just in case we here at Wicked Horor is the only publication that brings it up — Curry’s role as Kilokhan in Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad was rad AF.

Curry had the hallmark of any truly great actor: he was almost always the best thing about whatever movie he was in, even if the movie as a whole was forgettable. There’s not much reason to watch National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon I or McHale’s Navy, but Curry definitely brought his A-game when seemingly everybody else involved was content on phoning it in. Curry, even in some of the least desirable roles imaginable, never half-assed it. He was always on, always giving 100 percent and always doing everything he could to elevate the material. And that’s evident throughout his entire career, from voice work on totally obscure animated works like The Pirates of Dark Water all the way up to big-time Hollywood productions a’la Charlie’s Angels and The Hunt for Red October.

Of course, being a horror website and all we’re naturally inclined to focus on Curry’s two preeminent genre roles in Rocky Horror and It. And what a spectrum Curry covers there!

With Rocky Horror Curry managed to blend the gamut of human emotions into a single character: Frank was, simultaneously, goofy, sinister, sexy and charming … a combination that I’m sure has deeply troubled a lot of insecure viewers over the years. Curry’s become an icon in the LGBTQI+ community for a reason; he didn’t just bring campy overtones to the role, he turned the gender-bending, sexually-disorienting character into a true counter-culture figure, a post-postmodern hero/heroine of a movement that wasn’t even really a movement at the time the film was released. And when a character is still unnerving uptight squares and outright bigots 50 years later, you know it was one hell of a performance.

Tim Curry's animated film work is absolutely EXTENSIVE.
Tim Curry’s animated film work is absolutely EXTENSIVE.

And Pennywise the Clown. Where to even begin or end on that one. Curry’s performance in the 1990 TV mini-series is one of the most memorable in the annals of horror. He evoked sheer terror, but wasn’t without a little bit of gallows humor in the mix. He was Freddy Krueger times 10; the ultimate personification of the charismatic horror villain. He scared the living hell out of you, but you wanted to hear his next punchline. You were terrified whenever he was onscreen, but kind of secretly excited at the same time. Curry’s performance in It has been imitated countless times since, but I don’t think anybody has mastered that kind of role before or since. Which makes a lot of sense; I mean, there is only one Tim Curry, after all.

More than most actors, Curry gave us a lifetime of memories. If you counted up all of his stage, movie, TV, cartoon and video game roles, you’d probably have years of multimedia content to go through. He was an omnipresent kinda of actor, the kind of actor who felt like he would be around forever.

Alas, the real world doesn’t work that way. Curry may be dead, but his memory and his legacy will live in for eons. He wasn’t just an actor, he was a pillar of our childhood and linchpin of our entire pop culture cosmos.

He will be missed immensely. But he’ll never, ever be forgotten.
