Noah Centineo discussed his experience on Black Adam during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The actor played Atom Smasher in the 2022 DC Extended Universe film alongside Dwayne Johnson. He acknowledged the film’s complicated box office performance while reflecting on what the project meant to him.

Centineo described Black Adam’s financial outcome using candid language during the interview. He noted that an executive told him the movie “barely crawled over the line of profitable.” He then acknowledged that profitable is still profitable, but recognized the challenge. Centineo added that investing $250 million or more into a franchise requires significant returns.

Dwayne Johnson previously shared a different perspective on the film’s financial performance. Johnson posted on X in December 2022 that the film would “profit between $52M-$72M.” He cited a Deadline Hollywood report that factored in ancillary revenue and lower marketing costs. Johnson also compared its worldwide gross to the first Captain America film’s $370 million total.

However, industry reports painted a more complicated picture of the film’s profitability. Variety estimated the film could lose between $50 million and $100 million against a $600 million break-even point. A Puck report later stated that Warner Bros. executives suspected Johnson’s team leaked inaccurate financial figures. The film grossed $393 million worldwideagainst a reported budget of $190 million to $260 million.

Despite its mixed commercial reception, Centineo reflected positively on the film’s production culture. He praised Johnson and co-star Mohammed Amer for fostering a tight-knit community on set. He also highlighted how the experience taught him valuable lessons about large-scale Hollywood filmmaking.
