Chicago Fire pulled back the curtain on its most guarded recruit. Season 15’s “Take the Hit” ended with a quiet hospital scene that reframes everything viewers thought they knew about Marcus Burke and gives the drama one of its saddest reveals this year.
Fans get to know Marcus Burke a little more closely on Chicago Fire
Burke came to Firehouse 51 with swagger to spare. His confidence and tenacity made him stand out, but his recklessness kept his fellow candidates at arm’s length. For weeks, Chicago Fire fans watched a lone wolf with no backstory until this episode changed that (via NBC).
The call itself went sideways fast. Kidd trusted her candidates to enter a warehouse during a chemical fire, and someone ignored clear warnings and grabbed a gas valve. The resulting pressure surge sent firefighter Tony to the hospital.
Suspicion swung toward Burke, whose renegade image and secret Gaffney visit made him a convenient suspect; he denied it. So, Severide and Kidd dug deeper and found the real culprit: McCaffrey.
Confronted, McCaffrey dodged blame and phoned his father, an Illinois state senator. A CFD Chief soon showed up to coach Severide on handling his candidates: a nudge clearly influenced by political pressure. Severide responded by terminating McCaffrey, citing his dangerous choices.
McCaffrey didn’t take it quietly. He vented to the other candidates and then rounded on Burke, needling him about the wall he builds and the fact that nobody at the station truly knows him. Capp, meanwhile, asked Burke why he never stopped by Tony’s room. Burke shrugged it off, saying he didn’t want to intrude.
Those moments set up the episode’s closing gut punch. Chicago Fire cut to the hospital, where Burke sat beside his father: comatose, silent, and the reason behind his son’s distance. The recruit everyone pegged as aloof was carrying grief no one at 51 had guessed.
The reveal lands as more than a plot twist. It explains Burke’s walls, his hunger to prove himself, and the loneliness hiding under all that bravado. It also gives Chicago Fire a natural path forward: a candidate who may finally let his crew in.
