Courteney Cox just made the strongest pitch for directing Scream 8, and honestly, it’s hard to argue with her logic. The franchise veteran explained why she believes she’s the right person to take the reins behind the camera for the horror series’ next chapter.
Courtney Cox says ‘nobody knows more’ than her about Scream 8
Courteney Cox has expressed interest in directing a future Scream installment, according to Deadline. The actress made the comments while promoting her sophomore directorial feature Evil Genius at the Toronto Film Festival 2026. She has played reporter Gale Weathers in the franchise since the original 1996 film.
“I think I should, honestly. Nobody knows more about that movie than I do,” Cox said. She also acknowledged the contributions of others to the franchise’s legacy. “I mean, and the creator, and Wes Craven, and the writers, and everybody who’s been in it,” she added. Cox then called the prospect “great and fun and a good publicity thing.”
Cox most recently reprised her role as Gale Weathers in Scream 7 alongside Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott. Kevin Williamson directed the seventh installment, which earned nearly $208 million globally. That figure made it the highest-grossing sequel in the franchise’s history. However, the film holds the series’ lowest Rotten Tomatoes score at 30% among critics.
Spyglass has already moved forward with development on Scream 8 following the box office success. The studio tapped sister duo Lilla and Nora Zuckerman to write the upcoming eighth film’s script. Williamson and Campbell have also reportedly begun brainstorming ideas for the next chapter.
Meanwhile, Cox continues to build her directing career beyond the horror franchise. Her latest film Evil Genius explores the infamous “pizza bomber” case as a true-crime story. Courtenay Miles wrote the script for the film.
The cast includes Patricia Arquette, David Harbour, and Tom McCarthy in key roles. Cox described the project as a story about deception, desperation, and the blurred line between victim and villain. The film delves into the deeply human elements behind the notorious criminal case.
