There are some Oscar categories where fans would expect someone like Jesse Eisenberg to be in. However, the actor’s latest movie might just qualify him for an all-new category, placing him alongside some of the biggest names in the industry.
Eisenberg’s The Debut features no less than 7 songs from the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice alum, and one of them seems to be getting a push for an Academy Award. The song, titled “This City May Have Chewed Me Up (But It Hasn’t Spit Me Out),” is performed by Julianne Moore, who stars as the protagonist of the feature.
If the push for the Academy Award is successful, Jesse Eisenberg will be competing with the likes of Travis Scott and Taylor Swift in the Best Music category.
How The Debut’s one track became an awards season priority
According to a Hollywood Reporter report, A24 has been championing “This City May Have Chewed Me Up (But It Hasn’t Spit Me Out)” for an Oscar campaign. Usually, studios can turn in up to three songs, but only two can be nominated at a time. “This City May Have Chewed Me Up,” apparently, remains the top priority for A24.
Songs that are already competing for the category include Taylor Swift‘s “I Knew It, I Knew You,” which featured in Pixar’s Toy Story 5, Travis Scott’s “When I’m Home” from Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and Diane Warren’s “By Any Means” from By Any Means, among others.
The Debut is also directed by Jesse Eisenberg, who also penned the script. Apart from Julianne Moore, the movie stars Paul Giamatti, Halle Bailey, Eisenberg himself, Cara Buono, Craig Bierko, Eldar Isgandarov, and Bernadette Peters, among others.
The movie is set for a theatrical release on December 11, 2026. Lionsgate will distribute the film in the United Kingdom on January 15, 2027.
