Weir didn’t hold back while speaking on the Critical Drinker podcast, where he openly criticized recent entries in the long-running sci-fi universe. He revealed that he had actually pitched his own Star Trek series to Paramount+ but the idea was rejected. That experience clearly didn’t sit well with him.
Talking about the current lineup, Weir said, “I don’t like a lot of the new Trek… those shows are s—.” Weir added, “They didn’t accept my pitch, so, you know, f— ’em.” At the same time, he made it clear he doesn’t dislike everyone involved. He even called executive producer Alex Kurtzman “a really nice guy,” but doubled down on his criticism of the shows themselves.
Weir’s reaction taps into a bigger fan debate. Some viewers think newer Trek shows have drifted away from what made the classics hit. Weir pointed to Star Trek: The Next Generation as the kind of storytelling he grew up loving. That said, he did give props to some newer titles. The timing of his comments stands out. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was recently canceled after its second season. That move has slowed things down for the franchise. For the first time in a while, the pipeline looks quieter, with only a few seasons still lined up for release.

In a public message, producers referenced Gene Roddenberry and emphasized the series’ core idea of hope and progress.
