In 2023, Irene Michaels sat in the audience at the Josie Music Awards and heard her name called for Song of the Year. The winning single was “I Like Rain” — her first original song — and by her own account, the moment took her completely by surprise. Three years later, there will be no mistaking why she is in the room. Michaels returns to the 12th Annual Josie Music Awards, held September 20, 2026, at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, with three nominations — the largest slate of her recording career — for Artist of the Year – Pop/Pop Rock, Song of the Year – Multi-Genre for “Younger (K’ Alexi Shelby Klassik Filter Mix),” and EP of the Year – Pop for Golden.
The story between those two moments is the story of an artist who never stopped climbing. After her breakthrough win, Michaels was nominated for Artist of the Year and invited to perform at the Josies’ anniversary celebration at the CMA Theater inside the Country Music Hall of Fame — an honor cut short when a sudden illness kept her from the stage. Many artists would have let that moment define the chapter. Michaels wrote a thank-you note to the awards instead, promising she would be back. She kept that promise emphatically: her collaboration with Twizm Whyte Piece on “My Heart” went on to win the Josie Award for Song of the Year – Hip-Hop, proving her artistry could triumph in an entirely different genre.
Now comes the summit. The Artist of the Year – Pop/Pop Rock nomination recognizes the full sweep of her presence as a performer. The EP of the Year nod for Golden honors a collection that captures Michaels at her most radiant and self-assured. And the Song of the Year – Multi-Genre nomination for “Younger,” reimagined by Chicago house pioneer K’ Alexi Shelby, carries a poetry all its own — the song was penned by acclaimed composer Michael A. Levine, the same songwriter behind “I Like Rain.” The journey that began with one Levine song has crested with another. The circle could not close more elegantly.
“Younger” is, fittingly, a declaration — a song about a life defined not by age but by evolution. That has been the Michaels doctrine from the beginning. A voting member of the Recording Academy, she has moved from house music to pop to hip-hop to dance-floor remix culture without ever surrendering the elegance that is her signature, collecting Josie hardware in two different genres along the way.
The Josie Music Awards, the largest independent music awards organization in the world, have watched Michaels grow from surprise winner to perennial contender to triple nominee. When the ceremony returns to the Grand Ole Opry House this September, she will walk in not as a hopeful but as a headline — an artist whose Josie journey has become one of the great independent music stories of the decade.
It began with rain. It rose on a heartbeat. And this September, it stands three nominations tall — younger than ever.
