“There’s only one man brainless enough to steal from the syndicate.” Apple TV has revealed the official trailer for a kooky British comedy series titled The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, which is actually based on a true story. Sort of. Noel Fielding is Dick Turpin, the most dangerous highway robber of the 18th century. The comedy series arrives for streaming starting on March 1st. It is a fictional take on the life of highway robber Dick Turpin – originally Richard Turpin, an English highwayman whose exploits were romanticised following his execution in York for horse theft. By the early 1730s, he had joined a gang of deer thieves and, later, became a poacher, burglar, horse thief and killer. This is his story. Though it’s all made up, at least most of it is. Co-starring alongside Fielding in the ensemble cast are Ellie White, Marc Wootton, Duayne Boachie, Hugh Bonneville, Tamsin Greig, Asim Chaudhry, Dolly Wells, Joe Wilkinson, Mark Heap, Samuel Leakey, and Kiri Flaherty. This series looks extra peculiar and wonky and weird, just as expected. And I can’t stop thinking this guy looks like Lord Farquaad from Shrek.

In this comedy series, Dick Turpin (Noel Fielding) sets out on a journey of wildly absurd escapades when he’s made the reluctant leader of a band of outlaws — and tasked with outwitting corrupt lawman and self-appointed thief-taker Jonathan Wilde (Hugh Bonneville). In this irreverent retelling set in the 18th century, Turpin is the most famous but least likely of highway robbers, whose success is defined mostly by his charm, showmanship and great hair. Together with his gang of lovable rogues, Turpin rides the highs and lows of his new endeavors, including a brush with celebrity, all whilst trying to escape the clutches of the thief-taker. The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin is a series created by Claire Downes, Ian Jarvis, and Stuart Lane. With writing by Richard Naylor, Jon Brittain, and Noel Fielding, in addition to Claire Downes, Ian Jarvis, and Stuart Lane. Featuring episodes directed by Ben Palmer and George Kane.
