Fantastic Fest 2026 Review: RED SNOW is a Vampiric Christmas Horror Gift

Fantastic Fest 2026 Review: RED SNOW is a Vampiric Christmas Horror Gift

Christmas Horror titles tend to be based on festive themes (duh). A killer St. Nick; nefarious elves; sabotaged presents. Ilja Rautsi’s Nordic addition to the ever-growing Xmas massacre canon, Red Snow (aka Punaista lunta), is about one mean Santa—but not in the typical presentation. Rautsi blends familial dysfunction that’s exacerbated by holiday socializing with vampiric threats: a fat and jolly bloodsucker. The filmmaker’s darkly comedic, grab-bag approach gleefully paints the snow red with body juices, while creature elements add a nice visual ick—a fresh take on the subgenre that’s worth inviting inside.

Central to Red Snow is Johanna (Anni Iikkanen), a Twilight-obsessed emo fangirl who immerses herself in Stephenie Meyer’s glittery fantasy world as an escape from depressing realities. Her father, the power-trippy consultant Jukka (Kari Hietalahti), plans to remarry despite “Jo-Jo’s” angsty protests; mama is out of the picture, a voice on the phone who shows little interest beyond herself. To grandmother’s house they go, where Jukka has arranged a surprise. On the way is SantApp, a costumed Santa Claus to brighten the mood—but he’s intercepted by Martti (Hannu-Pekka Björkman), a red-suited, fake-beard-wearing vampire who steals his gig.

But Red Snow isn’t a clear-cut “vampire sneaks inside, kills family, leaves” blueprint. Rautsi has a few tricks up his snow-dusted sleeve, and none of them play by traditional vampirism rules. That’s part of the commentary; Johanna has her view of Edward Cullen-ass hearthrob vamps shattered by Martti. The girl’s morbid curiosity draws her to Martti, even though his eternal form resembles a post-middle-aged plumber: prominent beer belly, balding dome, unfortunate mutations. Conversations about fantasy and reality establish a strange attraction between Johanna and Martti, the vampire who could grant her supernatural immortality—just not in the way she’s dreamily romanticized.

The plot thickens when Martti arrives, but he’s not alone. Hietalahti’s Santa-pire is pursued by Kaarlo (Tommi Korpela), a suicidal Van Helsing type who bursts in with a skull-decorated stake cannon, and his nihilistic, gothy home nurse-slash-accomplice, Hoitsu (Krista Kosonen). It’s pure chaos as Kaarlo takes Johanna’s little brother Joni (Otava Rossi) under his wing—handing him a Luger pistol—while Martti breaks the family and its uninvited guests into pairs for easier prey. There’s a coal-black sense of humor about it all as Rautsi examines his characters, suggesting there might be more than one monster scurrying about the mansion. Martti first toys with his food, then chooses sides before Kaarlo blasts a wooden spike through his heart.

What stands out most is Rautsi’s vampire design, brought to life with impressive digital effects. We’re not talking about pointy fangs; Martti is a repulsive figure. To feed, his face flaps open to reveal a wiggling tentacle with a spike that’s like a phallic straw. It’s slimy, surreal, and reminds me of vampiric designs in FX’s The Strain adaptation. There’s a sexual nature to said sucker, playing into Twilight’s hunky exploitation of vampire mythology versus how Martti plays into Johanna’s desires by upholding the sensual pleasures that come along with being a vampire. But even so, that doesn’t downplay the beastly imagery of vampires as something to be feared.

And so the story unfolds like a comedy of errors. Jukka tries to be a hero, but his cowardice and misogyny show more. Kaarlo’s only focus is Martti, and he doesn’t care who gets in the way when he’s firing his weapon. Johanna sees an opportunity to remove her papa’s new lover from the picture (Nhung, played by Marja-Liisa Nguyen), but finds a more formidable adversary. There are mind games abound, but also plenty of Christmasy violence, like a standout sequence that juxtaposes Martti’s gore-everywhere attack on unlucky carolers against excited children tearing open wrapped presents. While Red Snow is definitely a horror comedy, and a pitch-nasty one at that—very Finnish—Rautsi doesn’t sacrifice genre indulgences like gnarly monster illustrations and limb-ripping aggression.

Truthfully, some may struggle with Red Snow’s comedic chops—it’s bleak and takes plenty of potshots. The story also leans into absurdity, favoring sensationalism over grounded material—more Rare Exports than Silent Night, Deadly Night. Rautsi doesn’t always nail the tonal balance between ha-ha’s and ho-ho-horrors, yet he’s still able to deliver a unique, ruthless Christmas Horror experience. Red Snow is no doubt a mean movie, but it’s the right kind of mean at the right points. As long as you have a stomach for sour holiday nightmares that swing big and hit often enough, keep an eye out for this one to hit Shudder at a later date.

Movie Score: 3.5/5
