James Cameron is developing another Terminator, but Linda Hamilton sounds pretty fucking comfortable leaving Sarah Connor behind.
Speaking with JustWatch while promoting Trust Me, I’m a Doctor, Hamilton appeared surprised to hear about Cameron’s plans.
“I’m out!” she joked, explaining that Terminator: Dark Fate’s financial disappointment made the prospect of another movie unexpected. She wasn’t wishing anyone a bad time, though, adding, “I wish everyone well.”
This isn’t a sudden change of heart. As we reported back in 2020, Hamilton had already told The Hollywood Reporter she would be happy to leave the franchise, although she remained open to something that genuinely interested her. Her latest answer sounds considerably more definitive.
Personally, I thought Dark Fate, the sixth and most recent movie, was a welcome return to the energy of Cameron’s first two films. Tim Miller (Deadpool) directed, with Cameron returning as a producer and sharing story credit. Finding a new path forward has been difficult, especially when every sequel has to live in the shadow of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which is essentially a sci-fi horror action masterpiece.
And if you need a refresher: Sarah Connor does survive. The movie ends with Sarah and Dani preparing for the future together, leaving the door open for Hamilton to return. Her decision to step away isn’t because the last film killed Sarah off.
But what interests me about another Terminator is how much the real world has changed around these movies. We’ve had a massive technological jump, and the questions Cameron was exploring about artificial intelligence and machines making decisions on our behalf feel painfully relevant.
Cameron addressed that challenge in a December 2025 interview with Flicks, confirming a development deal while explaining his concern that technology could outpace whatever story he writes. This remains a project in development, rather than an officially greenlit sequel with a release date.
Still, Cameron making room outside of Avatar to revisit this universe from his own perspective is pretty exciting. That feels like a much better reason to continue than another generic reboot. We already suffered through that embarrassing RoboCop remake.
I’d love to see what he has to say now. And if Hamilton feels she’s done everything she wants to do with Sarah Connor, I’m happy to let her have that ending.
