HBO Max’s Lanterns features more visual effects than fans might expect. A new behind-the-scenes video offers a closer look at the impressive work the VFX artists put into the series.
CoSA VFX shared a special featurette exploring the hidden visual effects used throughout Lanterns Season 1. Because a significant portion of the series was shot on location in California, the VFX team had to overhaul backgrounds to authentically recreate the fictional rural landscapes of Rushville, Nebraska.
Overall VFX Producer Eddie Bonin and CoSA VFX Supervisor Christopher Lance walked viewers through the intricate digital pipeline, detailing how shots were built from the ground up.
“Our dynamics team simulated dust clouds and bullet hits to match the plates in cases where we had to remove LA trees and mountains,” the team shared.
At one point, the artists also talked about the visual depictions of John Stewart at different ages. “There were a lot of discussions about marking the passage of time, and the determination was that we needed to show Jon’s hair and beard growth during his extended mission,” Lance explained. “So, we were really fortunate to have the scans of Pierre’s face so we could generate the right hair length onto his precise geometry.”
Why HBO has yet to greenlight Lanterns season 2?
HBO has yet to renew Lanterns for a second season following the conclusion of Season 1 on October 4. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean the series won’t return, as the network often takes several months to greenlight a show’s next season.
Lanterns’ Season 2 renewal will largely depend on whether the series can justify its considerable budget. The show has previously made headlines for being one of the most expensive productions on HBO with a massive $160 million budget.
Fans remain hopeful for Lanterns’ return after recent reports suggested that a writers’ room is working on potential future storylines for the beloved DCU characters.
Most recently, DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran told Collider, “If we’re able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that’s what’s going to dictate whether there’s a second season.”
