Curry Barker’s highly successful horror film Obsession is showing no signs of slowing down at the global box office and recently passed yet another milestone. The movie has surpassed industry expectations by a considerable margin with its massive box-office take and has now beaten a record previously held by Ryan Coogler’s Oscar-winning horror movie Sinners.
Obsession beats Sinners’ massive box office record
Obsession’s notable success at the box office has broken yet another impressive box office record as the movie has now become the highest-grossing original live-action film of the decade.
Sinners, led by Michael B. Jordan, was the most recent holder of this title, having concluded its theatrical run at the worldwide box office with a total of just over $370 million. However, Obsession has now surpassed this figure, with its current global collection standing at $372 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
Curry Barker’s movie has earned most of its worldwide collection in the US, with its domestic total currently rounding up to $235 million. Meanwhile, Obsession’s overseas collection, at the time of writing, stands at $137 million.
Produced on a budget of $750,000, Obsession made its worldwide premiere on September 5, 2025, at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film subsequently opened in theaters on May 15, 2026, across 2,615 screens.
Obsession opened to $17.2 million at the box office. It proceeded to earn $24 million in its second weekend, experiencing a 39% increase from its opening weekend collection. Obsession subsequently became the first movie released outside the Christmas window to increase its earnings for three consecutive weekends since Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
In addition to its tremendous box-office return, Obsession has also earned strong reviews from critics and currently boasts a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The horror film is now available to watch on streaming.
